Garmin eTrex series ...BPS/Cabelas usually have a sale around the holidays on the handhelds . This Youtube channel has some good tutorials .

I have a garmin hand held  Montana 680t  the Etrex is a nice unit and I have friends that are happy with it

I've got the Garmin GPS map 64sx, nice little unit.

800stealth:
I started with a black and white screen Etrex a long time ago (probably 20 years), A few years ago I upgraded to an Etrex 20 for the color and better topography contrast. I was happy with the 1st one and even happier with the newer model. Neither one ever let me down, and both have saved my butt in heavy fog or snow. If I had to buy another hand held today, it would be an Etrex.
