Title: Rotary Derby
Post by: 800stealth on Feb 07, 2023, 09:09 AM
It seems like this year has had the least amount of chatter about derby... I get that the ice sucks on big water but still plenty to walk around on.
I'm taking Friday and Monday off... Gonna stay in my lane and look for Perch and Slime darts. After seeing a few pics of shoreline storm damage from a buddy I know the spot is good or at least good enough lol. All the gear has been gone through and ready to go. Still need to grab a small bottle of the good Dr. and bait but other than that I'm ready. Looking forward to some good times and good people to share them with...
So, what's up folks? Who's ready? Who's tapping out?

Would be nice to be able to run whatever we want like last year but I'm not sure I'm feeling the 1500 pound gear train this year lol...

If you think about it, Is there ever really any talk of it?

It’s all Litterally Rhode Island and Connecticut giving us “ thanks in advance” posts for how “tall” ice is and if the can get a Acura Integra  on at Alton bay.

True enough, but there's still usually a couple local threads... Maybe I just start them every year and I'm late lol

Thanks in advance for your input...

Is the ice still skinny on winni? Asking for a friend since he has no car and will be taking the bus up there and putting his sled on the bike rack. Absolutely no way for him to check the ice. Any easy access with good fishing would be appreciated as well since he is on a wheelchair. Thanks in advance!  ;D

The bays are beginning to lock up, until then it’s just dink yellows on the ole Snitch rod and 2# test. I figure, we have every sport fish ever and they come in Goliath sizes so I’ll target a yellow perch.

500$ is a lot of money for head. It’s a 10$ rock here in 8 mile Detroit, or a 9.5” yellow perch and a Busch Latte

It'll probably just be a donation for me this derby.
We'll see. I haven't tested out the new hardware in my body yet on the ice.
Maybe a test run for a bit Saturday.
Good luck all.

Unfortunately I am going to miss the derby this year.  Going on a trip, leaving Sat.  I was going to say first time I missed the derby in 20+ years, but I just remembered I did tear my Achilles two years ago...

I dropped off all my gear at a friends house on the lake, to help cover the newbies that will be over for the derby.

Since I was there I had to fish.  Had between 12 and 1 inch of ice on the cove/main lake.  Just got one good sized pickerel.

I'm setting the over/under on ice rescues/reported incidents for the weekend at 7!

I'll be out - told work I was unavailable to travel this weekend so that I could actually make it this year- so feel free to blame the ice conditions on me.  The way ice was looking I actually did volunteer for a gig in NC and another in Daytona.... but they were already staffed... so fishing it is!

Will hopefully spend the rest of this week looking for a spot, and getting some fishing in finally.

I have time, gas, working vehicle, and no kids, but if you want to give up your spots - and I don't just want safe ice spots, we are talking winning fish spots, I will take them.  PM me (I don't want to share).

Have a great derby everyone... hopefully a Shanty member comes home a winner.

I am with you Joe.... don't like any teams from Philly (mostly due to the fan base I think) and not a big KC fan.  Pat's met expectations this year, could have done a bit better maybe, but were not going anywhere.  There time will come again... someday.

Philly is a toilet bowl

Not a fan of KC either but it’s the lesser of 2 evils to me.

Pats are a dumpster fire. They need a WR1 and a solid TE that can stay on the field. Once they have that we will see what Billy O can do with Mac then we know if he’s the guy or not.

Don't disagree... like most elections, rooting for KC is like picking the lesser of two evils.

Not sure if Mac is the guy or not, but others have done it with less than stellar QB's if the team can be built around him, and hopefully we have an owner that will do that.  A real Offensive Coordinator should help. Loyalty can only be taken so far... and it failed this year.

If its any consolation, I fished the derby 2 different  times when I was told to stay home. Once with a broken tibia, once with a torn ACL, the tibia healed quickly,  the ACL took 2 years.with the tibia I was in a cast from my nut sack to my ankle, I have a picture of me in front of my catch with my leg out to the side,  because I couldnt bend it.. but back surgery  is a different  animal, my company  .makes spinal implants ..not following doctor's orders. Could be real bad, and I hate doctors.

Lollll my first post ever on here, which is now gone. Was me with a pair of 4.5 lb Brookies I think I was 22 years old. And the first comment was Dick telling me I was a poacher because he thought 5 fish or 5 pounds applied in winter and my next comment was perchboy crying about if my jackers are legal. And I even did a introduction post and all lollll

And people wonder why I am how I am on here, and the ones against it are who taught me the ways. Vicious cycle I’ll clue ya.

I kinda miss Dickbaker's annual abacus, slide-rule and hocus-pocus calculations of how much ice there will be north of the notch by January.

It’s funny because…. Dick is a really  a really smart guy. In person he’s even enjoyable. I think there is a wall blocking how he takes things said on here that are not in person where he cannot sense sarcasm or other feelings.

I enjoy Dick, I have no ill feelings for him believe it or not. All my swuabbles on here are out of entertainment anyhow I don’t take them to heart.

Perchboy ( Forry) I had the most memorable ones with including one full season ban for me ( sorry Wally I might have 9000 posts if it wasn’t for that, veteran all star majesty Bruh)

Same thing, in person was actually an awesome guy. Hung out with both those guys at some of the get togethers.

All a far cry from the Snitch I’m not sure if I should contact someone from your virtual stroke posts ( he will comment ;) on this but I’m the stalker) I mean hell now I live in Maryland hammering crab cakes. Ask him. Lolll jk snitch see you soon, as always take care and stay safe. Wally will be on soon to ask a question about how to do better in your defense.

All in all. This is all in fun, I enjoy it, it’s an entertainment source for me in the winter for those willing to play. Look forward to future issues

My derby days go back to the beginning with a group of 8 or nine guys,,  before 2-face book and the internet,it never, ever was about catching fish, not that we didnt fish hard, we did, and were relatively serious  about it, we ate good had an adult beverage or 3 and just enjoyed the weekend for what it was, a day for adult boys( I better say girls lest I get into trouble) to go outdoors and enjoy the winter while contributing to a good cause.
Sadly, most of those I fished with are fishing  somewhere I'm not in a hurry to.fish at, my fishing partner  of 20 years ( who is 15 years my junior, just had had enough winter activity and stopped ice fishing) called me the other day and asked if I was fishing this year, my reply was does a bear XXX in the woods, he wished me luck and told me I was becoming  a crazy old buzzard, I take that as a complement..For a few years I fished alone, it wasnt fun, the last few, I've fished the derby with a few folks I met here on shanty weve developed a solid friendship,  fishing the derby is fun again and gives this old buzzard a reason to get out on derby day besides just being nostalgic.. good luck  to those that fish. Remember its mot always about catching fish, it's the journey that makes us who we are..

Nice post Joe... I used to always fish alone because all the buddies I grew up around were fair weather guys, They're ready to head to the lake when I'm already back home filleting. This site linked me to solid guys like me that have no issue climbing into a cold truck at 3:00 am to drive 2 hours just to have traps in the water before the sun can shine on them... I've learned a ton, had some great times, and made some great friends at "camp knucklehead".
Here's to the great group of people I've met on this site. Cheers!

Well said men. Camp Knucklehead definitely keeps me coming back for more. I gave up fishing and doing the derby with the "just here to party" crew long ago. Since then I either fly solo ,with my boy, or one other friend that's as committed as I am, most of the time. Although it's nice sometimes, its no longer always about getting the biggest one or being "the best"., It's about the journey like roc said. The great experiences come with others like-minded.
Ive met many great people on this site, but these 4 guys(and a few others) above are a true pleasure to fish with and just be around. Their focus and aim for fishing success is spot on. When the lone wolf's converge, it's game on.
Long live Camp Knucklehead!
See you soon boys.

This is a great thread to read to remind me what a solid group of guys (and ladies) are on this NH IS site.  Normally, I would of had my 5 or 6 ice trips on the big lake in the bag and the hardside would be anchored on derby grounds.  Not the case for me this year, mother nature has not cooperated.  I managed to scout miles of ice in the bays but my favorite grounds won't be accessible this year without an air boat or ARGO.  Anyway, Goodluck to everyone and be safe.

Dick is a good dude for sure.  I use to go to his neck of the woods for early ice.  He'd offer shiners from his bait pond.

More important you get the pronouns right than learn anything of any practical use.

Definitely will need your rubbers if you're fishing Southern Nh. Summer made a comeback today. March fishing weather.
60 on the seacoast right now. 20 mph warm winds.  Yuck ....unless you're one of the 30-40 bikers I saw out today

I don't know man, the lakes I scouted, there's not a stitch of snow! I think you can fish in low tops but they better have creepers on 'em!

If the Salmon identifies as a Rainbow is it then legal to catch it through the ice?

So I’ve read this a couple times and it still isn’t clear to me. To be entered for the Grand Prize Drawing. Is it the heaviest fish for the whole weekend? So 7 categories, 7 people ? Or is it heaviest fish in each category for each day? So 14 people ?
