It's that time again

for the

13th annual

Bartons Cove Ice Shanty gathering !

That's right folks, a full day featuring Feasting, Drinking , Jigging, Peppermint Patties, Flying Fish,
Shrimp on the Barbi', wind, "Ron Inhales Deeply With Pursed Lips", the Russians,
Wind, Atomic hook sets, Frozen Shiners, Laughter, Moonshine, Pondie Porn, Home Brew, chowder,
Olympic Table Lugging, Spanky, Pie in a Jar, wind and a little fishing thrown in.
Come visit some of Ice Shanty's history and help make legends of the future.

What: A gathering of the IceShanty tribe for bass, brats and B.S.

When: Sat, Feb. 1nd from sun up to whenever. Foul weather date Sat. Feb. 8th

Where: Bartons Cove on the the Conn. River just off of Rt 2 Gill, Ma. Power Co. Campground.
Use Main Rd. Gill for Mapquest Etc. (about 1/4 mile West down Rt.2)

There is a large parking area that can accommodate 50 + vehicles. It is an easy commute from anywhere as it is directly off of Rt. 2 not far from Rt. 91 in Gill MA just above the Turners Falls dam. For mapquest etc. use Main Rd Gill. You can expect to catch everything from Perch to Pike and all things in between. Last year one person caught both a Pike and a Walleye on the same 5 traps!!! We have iced pike at every gathering with several getting their first pike ever. We also had at least two people who iced their first fish ever!. Years past have been a great time and this year should be better than ever. If you can only make one organized event this year, this is the one to make!

I was hoping to give it a whirl for the first time but I will be in ME shooting an ice fishing commercial for a lure company. Bummer.

The red roof inn in Deerfield would prob be your best bet. It’s on rt5/10 near yankee candle. Rates are reasonable and not filthy.
I’d stay away from hotels in greenfield.

I was there Tuesday afternoon and there was around 7” in the inner cove, 3-4” black and the rest snow ice. Felt pretty solid but there were some big holes where the rain drained through. Didn’t check any other area but there’s a large fire carcass to the right of the access that should be watched out for if it gets covered in snow.
Regarding pike, while it’s possible to catch them there it’s not where I’d go to target them specifically.
Barton’s is fun if you don’t take the fishing part too seriously. Great party spot and perfect for a gathering.
Also, ya never know what’s gonna get pulled up (pike, walleye, mud puppies, etc)

Anyone ever hear of a bowfin getting caught there or is that just an oxbow thing?

We have iced pike every year at the gathering for 13 straight years. Two years ago the gold pin pike came out of the Cove. We have also seen Walleye consistently iced the last few gatherings. With that being said, it is not the fishiest spot in the world but it does provide action and you never know what will be at the other end of the line.

I have never seen or heard of a bowfin being landed above the Turners Dam.
