Title: Ice Fishings Biggest Gimmick?
Post by: icejunky on Oct 17, 2009, 04:20 PM
Open water fishing has a long list of gimmick products...the flying lure, the banjo minnow, helicopter lures...the list goes on and on. Each season i see a few more items for ice fishing that i would class as a gimmick...

So far what would you class as ice fishings biggest gimmick product

not sure if its the biggest gimmick, but the first thing that comes to mind is the light-up rods that came out a couple years ago.

I got mine as a gift, it looked great, nothing but a headache. The concept is good but way to many bugs to work out and too many moving parts to be reliable.

For me Reel Weeds, any Ice Braid or Fireline and Berkley Gulp. Reel weeds didn't do squat in the waters I fish.

I go with the jig up and the buzz stick rod.     I returned the jig up the next day, but still have that POS of a rod.  You can mark fish all day until you hit the little button and watch them scatter!!!!

Post by: icejunky on Oct 17, 2009, 07:48 PM
I hate to admit it but I have a few items on this list including reel weeds.  I never picked up the buzz stix thought it was kind of odd. Same as the rod that has the long thin metal piece works kinda like a spring bobber.

Pink grubs got me last year. Qualified as a gimmick for me. And of course... I bought some.

The jig up as pictured above was awful for sure. I would like to add the Nature Vision VPG to the list. It was the first run of the Showdown, a complete disaster. I understand they worked the bugs out before they re released VPG as the Showdown.

Gulp has caught me allot of fish, especially the pink ones. ;)

I've used gulp alot soft and hard water.   Works great for me.

Hilarious Skipper. Are you on facebook?  ;D Kidding. The Gulp earthworms(in the lil jar) have caught me a ton of fish. For the longest time, I kept them in my tackle bag just as a backup and didn't use them much( Like most other gimmicks). It only took 5 minutes of actually using them to see that they really work. They're very productive through the ice to boot.
Title: Re: Ice Fishings Biggest Gimmick?
Post by: Skipper on Oct 18, 2009, 10:24 AM
My kids call them "smelly worms". The earthworms in a jar are very versatile. I also like the gulp maggots and especially the fish fry. The fish fry are weird looking, but they are good for dozens of different presentations.

Oh, and they don't freeze and die. ;D

I haven't done much with Gulp through the ice, but I know in the summer that the crappie nibbles hammer 'em
Title: Re: Ice Fishings Biggest Gimmick?
Post by: snowman3406 on Oct 18, 2009, 10:35 AM
I got the banjo minnow years ago as a b-day gift, and I must say, I have caught a lot of fish with them.

As far as ice gimmicks go, the jigging tip up has to be the worst.  I can say I don't own one, but I have seen
them being used, and they are very noisy.
Title: Re: Ice Fishings Biggest Gimmick?
Post by: 1969starcraft on Oct 18, 2009, 05:02 PM
I would also say the jig up, but one of my polars broke and i put all the metal parts into the jig up frame and it worked great.

Title: Re: Ice Fishings Biggest Gimmick?
Post by: icejunky on Oct 18, 2009, 05:30 PM
I'm a little surprised by the amount of people who feel that pink is a gimmick colour. I have a large portion of my success with pink and always buy atleast one jig I'm pink when ordering new gear
Title: Re: Ice Fishings Biggest Gimmick?
Post by: spoxick on Oct 18, 2009, 05:39 PM
pink is great i find but if im on walleye i tend to switch it out as i find the pike love the pink gulp more then the eyes.

Regular gulp is the worst thing I've ever used.  Powerbait outperformed it easily 3 to 1.  Now that Gulp Alive has come out, it seemed to fixed everybad thing about regular gulp.
Title: Re: Ice Fishings Biggest Gimmick?

The biggest gimmick of all time, causing frustration for thousands of ice fishermen for years.....

THE SPOON ICE AUGER!!!!

Everyone says that these things will cut like a banshee if they are sharpened properly. I am here to say that they suck no matter how you sharpen them! The only way to make a hole slower would be to sit on the ice bare butt and allow your body heat to melt the ice. I would rather dig a hole in the ice with a #2 gravel shovel than one of these.
Title: Re: Ice Fishings Biggest Gimmick?
Post by: prchslyr on Oct 19, 2009, 08:38 PM
How come I found that absolutely hilarious but my girlfiend looks at me like a wierdo when I tell her to read it?
Title: Re: Ice Fishings Biggest Gimmick?
Post by: Irish Jigger on Oct 19, 2009, 08:55 PM
I had a friend who had a sharp one and it cut like no tomorrow. I got one and Skipper your alternate method would have saved me alot of frustration. I still pull it out and try to sharpen it I don't know why, I just can't accept defeat I guess. This season I'll just think of my cheeks freezing on the ice when I see it in the corner and want to take another crack at it.

Jigging tip-up, just a joke!!!
tip-up siren, scare the heck out of a fish,
arm grip sleeve, from Cabela's WHY??? rather use my spikes.
eagle claw ice cleats the little metal ones that hurt your feet,
ice auger quick coupler, bit falls of in hole and see ya later bit.
slush sucker, what happened to the old fashon scoop?
Just a few ideas from me. What is with everything being made out of plastic from H.T Enterprises??? I understand saving money but plastic breaks when cold.

If anything, you catch less fish having one with you. A buddy of mine has one. The thing is cool as all heck but there have been plenty of times I've been starring at his little screen while flags are up and my jig rod is half in the water.

The Jig-up. They were all over Ebay last season. I'll admit, I got sucked in. I'd set it up and by the time I get back to my shanty, the thing is jammed up. It's now being used for parts. The flag spring is nice.

Real Weeds - Never attracted a single fish.

HT LED UFO Light - 1/2 the lights don't work anymore and battery cover keeps falling off.

Buzz Stix - First the battery cover broke(got new ones), then the bullet got stuck on something in my sled and I ended up pulling it off the wires. I just use it without the feature I originally bought it for.

Underwater Camera - Spend more time fiddling with it than helping me catch fish. Is it really worth lugging along in my sled?

Now I can't say I've had bad luck with gulp. I've been using the Berkley Honey Worms in Yellow with good success. The yellow seems to work way better than Red or Natural. That's all I really fish with for bait. Problem is that with Gulp Alive on the market, the Honey Worms are harder to find. The "Alive" is way more expensive than a jar of honey worms, also.

Now tools that I really like(They may not be gimmicks):

1) IceGator - Can you say P-O-W-E-R?!!(just a bit heavy though...good thing I don't trek too far with it.)
2) VPG(Showdown) - I have really good luck with it.(Service was/is good, but I think the software upgrades should be free. I don't mind paying for the shipping, though)
3) Clam Ice Anchor system - Although I modified to to be able to connect on any side of my sled.
4) The "Groove" Rod Holders - Clip one to the shanty poles on each side and they are ready to hold any rod.

I bought these minnow last year that were real but had been cured in some kind of sweet smelling s@#%. I think they scared the fish away. Thought they would be great for jigging instead of running to the bait shop. Never caught one single fish that day and threw them away when i got home.  Never remember catching a single fish on the gold swedish pimple either. Something about gold on the panfish i think.

Automatic JIG-UP...nature vision has to be extremely embarrassed!!!!  Gotta be the worse gimmick ever.  I was so intrigued I bought 3 of them at once.  2 are in the trash and 1 is still brand new in the package hanging up in my man-room as a reminder that I am not as smart as i like to think i am!!!

I received the buzz stick as a Christmas present one year. I used it one time, decided that it was stupid and put it away. The following season i took the vibrator off, took the switch out and filled around the shaft of the rod (at the handle) with rtv sealant. It has now become a very sensitive medium action rod. To dress up it up i first put some shrink tube around the handle, applied heat and shrunk it down as far as i could around the rod. I have caught plenty of bluegill and perch with it. Im hoping that it will land me a nice walleye this year!

I didn't purchase the Real Weeds, but I did make my own substitute and they definitely hold perch as can be verified by the underwater camera. I do agree that it is easy to carry too much stuff onto the ice, but "some" of the stuff actually does help. I have also made questionable purchases, but sometimes you never know what will work until you give it a good try.

Buzz stix caught more fisherman than fish.

Polar vision=Waste of money

Pac shack

Power tower

Showdown

Funny how most of those products are Nature Vision........

I do believe the Power Tower would be useful to someone who had all the gizmos to put into it and didn't use them for anything else the rest of the year, and used it inside of a permanent all the time.  A lot of guys use their flashers and cameras and GPS's year round, and in a lot of cases it's easier to use them by themselves.  This thing is pretty much useless to me at least.

I'd have to chime in on the reel weeds also.  A couple friends of mine drag them things around with them everywhere they go for the last couple of years, and I've yet to hear them say that they make a difference.

I don't use my Slush Inhaler with my porty, but I use it and a Slush Box in my wheel house all the time. It sure beats having ice chips all over the carpet melting when it gets warmed up. One product that has me wondering is the Fish Elevator. I have never seen one, but some people swear by them. I haven't lost enough fish at the hole to make me want one.

I hate lanterns.  I've got 2 strings of LED christmas lights in my permy.  They work great, no fumes, no stupid 1lb propane cylinders rolling around in my truck, no broken mantles to fix, no broken globe to replace.  I have one of those auto-lighting ones, and globe blew up on me when lighting it 5 years ago.  Haven't really used it much since.

1-3' string of lights isn't enough light of course, I've got 24' of lights in my shack.  I'll lug a battery around if it means I don't have to carry extra propane bottles.

The rope light may be good for a permanent shanty. They suck for a portable. The lantern doubles as a great heater. When you start to get that Co head ache, thats when you know youve been out there too long. Unless theyre bitting ofcourse. The buz stick sucks too. They made a mint off that because it seemed as though it would create some new presentation that cant be mimmicked otherwise. What a scam. how about the new seat heaters? I have no use for this without seeing one.

How much did 24' of rope light cost? Pretty sure a latern is much more cost effective and convenient. I have never had a globe explode on me, I've broken globes but that's my own dumb fault. I can see the benefit in a permanant shack where all you gotta do is hook up your battery but even then how long does a battery keep 24' of lights bright? I don't see a cost/benefit outcome that makes it worth it...

Not rope lights, christmas lights, and they were 10 bucks.  I tested my little vex battery out on the string and it lasted 8 hours, but I have to plug them into a voltage converter, which I already had.

A headlamp is the lightest, best thing that has come my way. 3 AAA batteries last forever. An energizer headlamp costs $12. Don't even bother w/ flashlights anymore 'cept when I want the 1 million candlepower along.

As for Gimmicks.
Red hooks
fluorocarbon line

I stopped using headlamps for ice fishing.
One time I got a new headlamp and thought it was the coolest thing ever!  8) turns out when it's cold as umm winter batteries don't last as long as one might hope.  :-\ So I came prepared and had some extras in my pocket nice and warm so they would work.   I installed the new batteries and reach up to click the button and feel the cap that holds the batteries in the ONLY LIGHT SOURCE I BROUGHT WITH ME fall off of the headlamp and magically fall straight down the middle of the hole.    Did I metion that there was no moon at all?!  :-[ I'm stupid for not having any more lights with me but...STUPID HEADLAMP!   :%$#!:

Gotta agree here. I've had my Energizer headlamp for over 3 years and haven't had to change the batteries yet. I just cycle through the lights that I want..White(bright), White(dim), White(All) and Red. Great for night fishing and walking the trails back to my truck when I am done.

Actually they would be the LED equivalent of a "C6" size christmas light bullb.  No, they aren't the brightest lights out there, but they are bright enough to read, and that's all I need.  I was pleasantly surprised the first time I lit them up.

Gimmicks.....

From all the complaining I've seen on this forum and from one that I seen last year, those cube-style shacks look like they are more trouble than they are worth.  They are bad in the wind, and it's always windy in the winter.  All the major players are pushing those shacks this year, probably because they are cheap, but if a guy is serious about using a shanty, get a flip-over style like the fish trap or frabill trekker or something of that sort.

hmmm interesting...Festive and functional at the same time...I know some company put out small lengths of led rope lights and they did not impress me.

Clam did a 3' LED string, I debated on getting them for a long time, and even wired a 12v powerpoint to my vexilar for that purpose, but the $30 price tag is pretty steep for the few lights that are in there, and you'd probably need at least 2 of them to make it workable.

I'll agree with that.  Seems to me those cubes would be like a huge sail out there in the wind.  Also, those X4 shantys from Clam were so huge!  The group of guys I go with to MN every year fished out of one.  They are older & don't like to move much.  My buddy & I either fish out of a 2 man or each in a 1 man.  We like to be able to move fast.  Well, you should've seen them trying to break that thing down at night in the middle of a snow storm!  They were screaming like little girls trying to hold that thing down in "The Perfect Storm"!!!  So funny to see & hear.  Especially since I wasn't in it trying to take it down.  I don't think they are making that fortress anymore.  Any 4 man is way too big!  Bring out 2 2 man.  That thing was sooooo heavy also!

CUBE HATERS!!! j/k. ;) They've got there place. Jigging solo no, way. Fishing with two kids 5 and 8...Priceless. Setting up in the wind isn't tough after doing it once just like anything else. I honestly think one of the worst gimmicks is the underwater cam.

A new meaning of the term "Hole heater". Meaning Hazzy's the "hole" I'm not talking about the actual...Nevermind.

The automatic jigger.
I got one that works great!  attach it to a bucket   and makes it easyer to drink a beeer and still fish 2 lines  lol

now those ice cubes!    that I also wasted $ on   never did get it set up on ice   I did set it up in the summer when I got it   but not before 1 finding one hub broken outta the box  and broke 2 more before it was all done   though they did send me replacements   but now it is lop sided with 1 original  hub     and still was a PITA to set up

Tie a coat hanger to your foot, attach line, break out guitar, start entertaining, tapping foot. Soon they will come...  ;D

Now if it works for you that's all good.
As for cubes, I love my cube. I beat the heck out of it. Have had to replace 2 poles after 50 trips. Would like a flipover, in addition to the cube, but their weight holds me back.

I have a cube also.....I only use shelter if its high winds or extremely cold, but have never had an issue with mine.......I set it up as a base camp when i arrive then hole hop......keep my extra gear in and a place to get a quick warm up....It fits perfectly within my jetsled.....I did see the Frabill's this year, and i did  like the 2 door option, and would consider that if something should happen to mine......

Ditto!  I have a Shappell 6000.  Excellent, lightweight, large shelter.  You tied it off with ice anchors and it will withstand strong winds.

I bought a new Jiffy last year (w/ the tecumseh motor) but I don't know that I would buy one this year...I went and looked at a couple this year but the plastic thing that they have the start switch mounted to is WAY flimsy and what is with that exhaust redirecter thing?!?!?  that will get bent/broken the second trip out unless you are extremely carefull with it.  And not to get picky but I don't like all the plastic on the throttle linkage either.  It may run great and cut holes like a mother (I have never seen one running in person) but I'll stick with (what is now) my old school Jiffy!  ;)

Since when is an auger a "Gimmick"? Attach one of those Hole Hawgs, and you have a gimmick. Alone, an auger is a tool, with some a little better than others, JMO

That's the thing about these new augers, I haven't seen one in action either, but I'm going to be smart enough to withhold any judgement about them until I do see one in action.  Everyone on here is raving about the Solo Strikemaster, yet in mass production they have yet to prove anything.

Gimmicks....  I know everyone is going to bash me for this one, but the Automatic Fisherman.  I love to set my own hook and hand over hand a fish through the hole, why do I need a pole to do it for me?  This one probably is more of a gimmick to those of us who really love our old fashioned tip-ups.  They may work, but why?

I wrote a review of the new jiffy pro II, it sucks.  Made a lot of gear noise that sounded like self distruction, non metal everywhere, pull rope is a foot shorter than the older model jiffy, basically it's been in the progress of being replaced/repaired for a month now....nice thing since it's ice fishing season. Don't sell your old jiffy's off. My 28 year old one runs better than the new one that isn't here.

Gator's Lightweight Battery.

Are you talking about the lithium Ion ones that just came out?  If so, what's wrong with them?
Title: Re: Ice Fishings Biggest Gimmick?
Post by: WYIfish on Jan 06, 2010, 08:58 PM
Nothing, as far as I know.  At about $600 per battery pack, I would think they'd be plated in gold!
I'm just miffed that when I purchased my Gator (first generation) last year, there was talk of a lightweight
battery coming out within a year or so, but it would be pricey at first.  Well, I guess that was a substantiated rumor, but the kicker is that the battery is only for GenII Gators....not that I could have afforded a $600 battery pack.

BW
Batteries costing $600, $500 jiffiy's that are suspect, it really makes me appreciate my 25 year old spud that cost me $20 and I can sharpen it first try, it always starts, and it always works.  Call me wishing for the old days to come back.  Spud two holes and catch the same amount of fish....I do love my electronics though.

I have one of the new Jiffy's, 2nd trip and i busted that retarded quick release contraption.   I knew it would break the second i saw it.   Hope the rest holds up a lil better.  WTH were they thinking?  It takes longer to try and slide that cover over the pin then it does to justpull a cotter pin or something.

I have had the retainer plastic thing get damaged on the cuff, it might cause me to loose the pin.....only my pin, cuff, and powerhead are all misplaced somewhere in MN. on a return for repairs.
maybe I get to use it before spring.  Jan 22, power head back, no pin and cuff. Now a nice shinny new bolt works even better. Nut and lock washer look snazzy. I always wanted to be an engineer but could never spell it, and now I are one.

Wow, I was suprised to see several people mention the Buz Stix!  I just got the Auto Buzz since the wholesaler was clearing them out.  Took it out Friday and it out-produced any of the other deadsticking rods, and by a long shot.  Wouldn't spend the money on one if I only fished one rod, but have a few in the water at once, the programmed jigging made a huge difference.

2nd that makes quick work of cleaning holes in the perm. shack.  and dont carry mine around ever, just leave it in the perm. shack.
