Family fun
« on: Feb 14, 2020, 08:04 PM »
A few pics of some of the fun times so far this year. The kids love the jaw jacker! Never seem to get good fish pics... they throw them back in too fast. Haha

Thanks bud, if I had half of your fishing skills and knowledge, I might catch a few more fish! For now, I’ll stick to building and having fun regardless. Would love to take the house out and catch some of those black crappies you get into, not sure where to gain access over there. We get one every once in a while on berry, and they are usually good size.

I'll be there all day tomorrow....... Shoot me a pm. I'm pretty sure I know where you can get that shack down there and on the ice.

Minnesota fisherman here with a question about the shack.  Why is it built to stay up off the ice?  We build them basically the same except to drop down on the ice when you fish. We call them wheel houses.

That’s a great question, I think the main reason is that we up here in northern New England see a wide range of conditions and I am guessing much less ice than you guys in Minnesota. We do not usually have the luxury of plowed roads and usually are bouncing around through a foot of snow.

Weight is important, I’m guessing that our house is around 1700 lbs. the ground clearance helps get through the snow and slush.

Also, we jack this up as do it won’t freeze to the ice.... happens all the time up here. The space underneath definitely creates a cold draft and it is tough to drill holes, so I can see why it would be nice to drop it down though.

FYI, as a comparison.... we only have 13 inches of ice right now, and we launched it on 9” about 6 weeks ago.

House looks great.  It's a beast.  I do the same run the jacker in the house works great.  I also have a bunch of rattle reels.  Just made it to 7 inches house probably  won't see ice this year.

Not all wheel houses are heavy.  Core and Ridgeline make 6.5 x 12 houses that are 1100-1400 lbs. But larger heavy houses are more the norm and are in the 2500-3500 lb class.  Ice for us is usually 12-18 inches by the first week of January with 20-30 inches in February.  This has been a bad ice year  I was out Thursday and the ice was only about 18 inches.
