inland trout tip up setup
« on: Dec 19, 2006, 08:56 PM »
I'm getting ready to take my son out on a lake that was stocked with rainbows and brookies.  Does anybody have any ideas on the best way to rig up a tip up for stocked trout?  I thought it would be fun to watch some tip-ups while jigging with my flasher.  Also, where do you guys find most of your trout?  Where in the water column?

In the smaller trout lakes I fish, I have found trout at every depth from right under the ice to 12 feet. They just seem to wander randomly. They will even go very close to shore. I usually tip a small hook{10 or 8} with a 2 inch emerald. Ive caught up to a 22" trout this way.

I fished my tip-ups with a red bead followed with corn on the hooks.  I have caught a couple that way...no wall hangers.

I have caught trout 8 feet down in 35 feet of water, on bright sunny days.   Keep changing the depth of your tipups until you find them.

When I get my tipups ready, I make a bunch of Fluorocarbon leaders that are 2 to 3 feet long.  I also use # 18 or # 20 hooks on these rigs.  Fluorocarbon fishing line is nearly invisible, and the small hooks have increased my success rate.

The small hooks also help to keep your minnow more lively.

Hope this helps,

Wiener
