I switched from the Italian bread crumb gig (with egg wash first) to using Bisquick about 3/4's of the time now - just mix as is says on the box, and add what ever spices desired in the batter (pepper, garlic powder, little cayenne pepper, dried parley) -- cook in 350'sh deg. canola oil (use a high flash point oil, and it's gotta be hot with a batter coating, or it becomes a nasty blob) -- really a decent change from the traditional crumb coating -- it's almost as good as using a deep fryer - and a lot easier than cleaning the deep fryer after -- I only brake-out the fryer for the big batches now -- it's a worth a try -- you can't hardly mess it up, as long as your Temps. high.!
sounds really good man
That's a Bluegill, no that's a Sunfish...I've heard it both ways!!

;)  Well, if the ice won't cooperate, then you just have to revert to different methods.  Decided to try Maple Springs yesterday from the shore.  Parked the truck on the turn and waded the shoreline with my noodle rod. Red/Green tube jigs tipped with maggots and I found myself in perch heaven.  I had to wade out waist deep and make long casts with a float to reach them.  But it was worth it as I caught at least 150 perch in three hours.  What was nice was that I bucketed a limit and there wasn't another fisherman in sight.  The 60 degree temps made it nice. Throwbacks were from 8 inches down, and keepers up to 11 inches.  Most of the keepers were in the 9 inch range.  Now that it has cooled off again, we just have to pray for cold temperatures so the hard-water guys can get back in business.

Nice! I thought about doing that as well but never went through with it. My 9.9 is getting worked on or I would have been out in the aluminum.

I roll in seasoned flour. Drench in seasoned egg wash. Then roll in crushed Saltine crackers seasoned of course and fry in crisco/oil mixture. Way better taste and texture than bread crumbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its been 5 yrs sense i was able to remember my good breading mix. I cant seem to figure out the mix of flour to crumbs. It pisses me off. Its the year im gonna figure it back out and write it down haha. But i have heard good things about the bisquik batter. I might go different and make a new one out of that
Just another day on the ice!!!

The amusement park is actually right down the road at Midway. To fish maple springs you have to park on the highway and walk down. You can park at the Viking Club between the 2 as long as you stay on the end of the lot away from the club itself and you are right on the water. It is real nice of the club to let us park there we just need to obey thier wishes.

Midway is considered, or is a state park now no problems parking there in the winter.

:) Don't park where the signs are in Maple.  Follow the street along the lake until you come to a sharp bend in the road.  I park right there.  Just make sure you are off the road.  Then backtrack into Maple walking the shoreline south.

There usually isn't any safe ice (in my book 7" is safe) until early February or late January.

Does your husband go out on less than 7" of ice?

i guess you can wait for the logging trucks to drive on the ice so that you know its safe.  good luck and I credit you for your patience in your quest to find good ice.  more room for us when theres only 4".  let me know when your gear hits craigslist.  Not interested in your tape measure though

I can see the Burtis webcam, but can anyone give a recent report as to whether any ice survived N of bridge in any part of Bemus bay after recent warm up?   I know there was an inch or two in most of bay when I left New Yrs day...  Interested in whether we'll be starting from scratch up there when cold comes back next week.   Thanks.   Was hoping to be able to walk out to weed line from Stow / Bemus area in next two weeks or so...

I drove up the lake from lakewood to mayville yesterday.  Open water from ~ashville/cheney crk to mayville and all the way across to hartfield.  Weird to see seagulls floating around where you fished 10 days ago!  I haven't been down to check out burtis but from what I can see of the web cam it may be worth a try tomrw.   Depending on the wind I may check it out for the last couple hours of the day.  Sure won't be no 7" tho!

Been a couple years since I have seen more than 7" ... to each their own though. I managed to stay dry this week (had to work no chance to push it). I can tell you living right next to a lake (cassadaga), it was frozen coast to coast last week now it is almost totally open. Need the winds to chill if we are gonna get any chance to fish the deeps this year. Now that I am back to being a weekend warrior I will be out in the hurricane winds saturday, trying to line up a ride/partner for tomorrow evening right now, but looks like I will have to wait.
