First year on the forum. I'm from Kronenewetter in central WI, haven't been out as much as I want this year. Just finished a new shack, should be out this week.

Hey EP, welcome back. I don't know anyone that gets to fish as much as they want. Make the best of the time you have! Thanks for posting up in the WI thread.

Kronenwetter is my favorite WI city/village name. Never fails to put a smile on my face when I say it while we're driving up 51. Question? It's right next to Wausau/Rothschild...how big is Kronenwetter?

That's funny! We say "Kronenwetter" and giggle everytime we pass it. It's my inner juvenile and it helps that I have a couple teenagers that giggle with me.

Population is just over 7500, but it's really a village not a city. It shares the same zip code as the City of Mosinee.

Anyone fish the Nelson or Alma area? Never fished the river but I need to get out there to pop my cherry. Any safety tips, access points or recommendations would be appreciated, rivers always make me nervous.

Check out Merrick state park. I have friends that head out from there to fish backwaters, its near fountain city.

There are a number of sloughs which are not legally accessible because there is not a designated railroad crossing.
If you fish Merrick Park, most of the fishing takes place on grass lake.  However you need to cross a channel to access grass lake along with a couple other sloughs.  Take a spud to check the ice going and coming back. I have not fished it in many years, but if nothing has changed,   you can expect mostly gills, with a  few crappie.  Also was a good spot for bass, northern,  and occasionally walleye.

Sounds like Winnebago is getting bad I heard 8 vehicles went in in the last couple of days. Some clubs are taking the bridges and trees off. Be careful.

If you got a ladder or plank you can still fish.

Gonna have to be MN. Haven't had walking ice @ Thanksgiving for years here. Used to be I'd tote ice stuff up deer hunting and fish after. Sometimes even before. Not any more.

I was out in Sawyer County the day before Thanksgiving this past year. 3" of black ice is plenty for me with the proper safety equipment.

I also was out ice fishing the day or maybe 2 days after Thanksgiving. I believe there was fish-able ice on Thanksgiving in Sawyer Co. last year.
