Hello just bought a new wheelhouse never drilled in one before using a Clam plate and 6 inch Strike Lite auger would you go 12 or 20 inch extension. Hoping to drill holes with house half up. I bought a 20 and it goes equal with my nose now but not sure if I should return it and get a 12 I fish in central MN

My pistol bit and drill has an 8 and I’m fine late in the year. I would say 12 would be fine. You don’t need any till you get over about 2 feet of ice, depending on what your auger section is. I’m also in central Mn.

I had to use 2 1/2' of extension in my shack in N/W Ontario this winter, usually 18' is enough.

I just checked my pistol bit extension and it’s 8 inches. Like I said in the previous post I’ve never had a problem with it and I fish right up to the last day of the season if ICE permits, close to you (central Mn). I wouldn’t want anything less so six might be marginal but 12 in my book would be perfect.

If it's too short, yer screwed. If it's too long, yer not. Just like an extension ladder.

I have a suggestion ...this may take some doing . Get the Clam Plate extension ..which goes from 6" to 16" ...here is the tricky part ...get/make a sleeve/collar to accomidate the SM inside diameter and will fit over the CP extension ..you may  have to drill some more holes in the CP extension .. it is hollow so should be easy. You may be able to retro fit the one of  Clam Plate adapter to accomidate for the sleeve .

There are folks on Ebay that have made all sorts of adapters ...primarly for the Nils to Clam Plate ...tsome do custom work.

If it's too short, yer screwed. If it's too long, yer not. Just like an extension ladder.

That depends on how much headroom you have in your shack - I've got just over 6' at the peak. With an Eskimo P1 with an 18" extension I can just barely angle my auger into the hole with maybe an inch of space to spare. I should have gone with a 12" extension.
The more I fish, the less I know about fishing...
Send me a PM if you'd like info about how I built my ice shack
