Thickest ice in PA?
« on: Jan 24, 2014, 10:00 AM »
With all of the extreme cold temps we have been building some good ice and I was wandering what the thickest ice you guys have seen in PA was?  I have only been seriously ice fishing 4 years so I'm just curious.

P.I. Bay had 21" (measured) eighteen or so years ago. Don't remember the exact year!!!!! I know one thing, it was some tough drilling with the hand auger!!!

I fish deep creek, Maryland a lot.
2 or 3 tears ago I went down there was 19 inches of ice. When I got home that day, That's when I bought my gas auger. LOL. I will never hand auger ice like that again.

During the winter of 2002-03 I recall ice fishing on Wallenpaupak on April 1st...my jiffy ice auger went down that the motor was just about on the ice. I'd have to measure my auger worm to get a depth but that was our last thick ice in the NE anyway.

Couple weeks back, had up to a foot at Black Moshannon (on top of a mountain in central PA),
, needed an extra set of lungs to get through with my hand auger, and it's only getting thicker with the cold were having now. Definitely sounds like a year we'll be ice fishing in April with t-shirts on.

I remember a few years back, on the pack during the first week on March, there was I think 20 or 21 inches.

I recently moved from Alaska and found this to be quite interesting to read. The most I have drilled through was 6 ft of ice while in Alaska. Granite some of the ice was rotten mush but it took 2 flights and 2 extensions. And that was a powered auger!

Many, many years ago I measured 21 inches on High Point in Somerset county.  Used an old spoon style auger back then.

That is crazy I think the most I've ever had to go through was a foot

Thank You, yes it's the GoPro silver, and I use the GoPro studio software. It helps that I took a couple of computer graphics classes back in high school, but it's pretty simple for anyone to learn to use. Only issues are the audio, I just have music playing right now, but would like to be able to give my commentary, the GoPro audio hasn't impressed me much yet, so I'm wondering about just recording afterwards with the microphone on my computer. Also, thinking of buying one of the tripod mounts so I can actually be seen reeling the fish in.

Don't mean to hijack the thread too much. Anyway, I hit Black Moshannon again today, and found 14 inches of ice in one spot.

The thickest ice I have ever drilled through was at least 10 years and it was just over 34 inches and was on Hamilton lake near Welsboro.    we had a hand drill at the time went down drilled two holes fished a little and did not catch much and wanted to move but did not want to drill more holes though that ice with an old mora so we went and warmed up a little in the truck and saw some guys that were packing it up that had drilled quite a few holes with there power auger and very quickly got back on the ice and vulture their holes before anybody else could.

Here in Carbon Co. we have had fishable ice for more than a month. This week it is over nine inches of black ice and based on the weather it could be the 18" measured back in the 70s on a private lake.
