Unpainted tungsten teardrop jigs
« on: Feb 27, 2020, 08:53 PM »
So I've started jigging tungsten teardrop jigs the past couple years and have amassed a bunch of them.  But the fly tier in me keeps wanting to paint my own blank jigs.  I was wondering if anyone might know of a site that sells bulk unpainted teardrop style jigs?

I bought a 25 pack of the 5mm from Shelts via AMZ - decent hooks on 'em :)

I've played that game. Custom painted them for myself and friends now for two years. Theres two tungstens you can get. One have extremely brittle hooks that will break on you if you bend them or twist when taking the hook out of a fish, we went through this. Shelts, Amazon, and amped you are guaranteed to get these brittle hooks I have noticed. We broke 5 of them fishing this year, I went through my box/bins and tried to bend each one and broke about 30 more. Expensive mistake buying those.

I've gotten good ones so far from a guy on ebay (cant think of his name) and from larsons quality jigs website.

Then of course you can drop factory ones in acetone and take the old paint off to repaint. Just dont do this with vmc jigs, they are two part jigs held together with epoxy.

You'll need to order your unpainted in october next year to find a good stock with a decent price, they are usually all sold out of good ones in 4mm and 3mm by late nov/early dec..

The last ones I bought fell apart when I heated them in my toaster oven at 350.

That would be because the solder melts at 300  ::)

I have had good luck with the plated jigs from Sportsman' Direct. Also great people to work with.
