Anyone fish Lake Pleasant area in the Adirondack?
« on: Mar 11, 2019, 03:48 PM »
Hello, I'm new to this site.  I live near Rochester NY. I am going to be in the Adirondacks this weekend staying on Lake Pleasant.  I would like to do some fishing. I am used to fishing for northerns in the finger lakes. I am not stuck on fishing for Northerns if there is other plentiful fish around.  I have heard good things about the pearch on Pleasant.  Anything else to fish for on that lake? How about other near by lakes.  All information is very helpful!

Might want to post this in the New York section. Welcome to the site. Plenty to be learned here from the members and past threads.

Lake Pleasant has perch, pickerel, brown trout, lakers, and walleye.  Not the busiest of lakes ice fishing.  Piseco slake is nearby, has lakers that bite we’ll, but generally small.

Don't forget Pike closes on Friday when you're making your plans on where to fish. Plenty of areas with trout perch and salmon in that neck of the woods though

I had forgotten that some seasons close on Friday. I have never fished for trout through the ice. How would I do that?

Robert.d12  welcome to ice Shanty.  In the Lake Pleasant area you have three good size lakes Sacandaga,Piseco and Lake Pleasant. Piseco has lake trout and land locked Atlantic salmon most of the lake trout caught are below the legal size limit for the lake. Believe it is 21 inches. Both Sacandaga and Lake Pleasant contain walleye, yellow perch and brown trout to my knowledge. Tanner Outdoor Sports on route 8 in Speculator,NY sells bait I would also look at the NYDEC website it may contain maps for these three lakes think all the lakes are located in Hamilton county. Have a great trip and good fishing.

Best bet, fish Piseco Lake.  Go to Poplar Point State Campground.  Parking lot at boat launch is plowed for ice fisherman.  Walk out to 35-60 fow, should be good to go for lakers.

I have best luck with tip-ups set at various depths for trout. Some just under the ice, some half-way down, and for perch some near the bottom. I have caught perch in that lake from 5 feet to 50 feet of water. You best bet is the 20-40 foot range for perch. There is also smelt in that lake. both species like hali-jigs tipped with spikes.

Here's a link to a lake contour map. Good luck and let us know how you did.

Thanks for the info! When you are fishing tip-ups for lakers do you still fish in deep water or are you in shallower?
Also, how do you rig your tip-ups?

When I have smelt, I place 15-20 ft under ice.  Dead smelt, put pin holes in belly and put right on bottom.  If using suckers, about a foot off bottom.  That’s what I do with tip ups when I use them, I jig most of the time now.

On Piseco Lake if you use the Poplar Point campground access the shoreline drops quickly into twenty feet of water I have caught lake trout on tipups using both emerald shiners/icicles and small suckers within two hundred feet from the shore. Like Adkroy posted vary the depth bait is set at for the salmon go closer to ice surface say five to ten feet down with the tipup.

We have to try Piseco in a couple of weeks.

Lets pick a laker lake where the exact specifics of its workings are not highlighted on these pages.   ;)

why would anyone fish piseco to begin with? I haven't heard of even a legal sized laker being caught there in YEARS.

Piseco is a good lake for 1st timers, with plenty of action.  Many people use the access point I described, and fish off their.  I probably would not fish right there, as I know of an area that produces well, and have seen friends catch's in the 23-25 range.

What I know is that 99/100 Lakers caught in that lake are under the legal size. And that's giving it credit.. good place for first timers for sure but that's about it

A similar sized lake trout was caught on 7th lake about10 years back... i think it was 23 pounds had a 12 inch rainbow trout in its stomach. Same thing, photo in the Express. But the chances of repeating a catch like that, or even remotely close to that there.. is highly unlikely

The two days of warm temps, and some rain tomorrow, will not hurt the ice conditions.  The snow on ice will protect the ice, and since no ice cap on land, the snow will soak up the rain.  This time of year the shorelines are the first to go from run off and rain, but don’t think it will be an issue this weekend, with light rain tomorrow forecasted.
