penn 420ssg
« on: Jan 04, 2009, 03:08 PM »
The new chineese made penn ultralight spinning reel. I own a bunch of reels, including Ticas, diawas, quantums, okumas, mitchells. Which I like all of them some better than others.
Question is whay do I never ever here anyone talking about the 420-430ssg for ice? Is it because at $75 they are not competitive or what?

I've always used Penns as well, and thought I'd pick up an ultralight for ice fishing. Since I've always loved Penns, I bought Captiva CV500 on ebay without even trying it. Is a heavy reel, but there is no anti-reverse--you get some back play. My $19 SIlstar Tiny even has solid anti reverse. Anti-reverse is extremely important especially through the ice, IMO. I'm very disappointed at the Chinese made ones. I would not recommend them anymore.

The Captiva is a piece of junk but the 420ssg is a great reel. Load it with 12# crystal fireline and handle anything that swims under the ice.

I collect Penn reels my new made in china 420ssg is so far a very nice light reel. It seems like it would be more popular...oh well. I use them on my jigging rods but love the okuma epixor eb 20 for live bait..
