Securing St Croix?
« on: Jan 18, 2009, 08:51 AM »
Hey guys, I've been wondering what else is out there to secure a reel to a St Croix Premier rod. I know there has to be another solution besides tape, isn't there? I called Jason Mitchell (rods) and spoke to Jason personally, and he said lots of users are using Tommy Tape (or hockey tape), but I would prefer something plastic/rubber.

Like the included plastic pieces on my Genz rod, that slide, and you insert your reel, and secure. I know it may sound like a nit-pick, but I really would like to know if there's something out there like this, or if anyone has any other suggestions.

I know if you go to some rod building websites, you can find some of those plastic "twist-lock" type of things that you're talking about. There's ussually a couple of different sizes, so you just have to find the right size to match them your handle size.

I use tommy tape--self fusing silicone. No residue left like electrical tape.

You could always try shrink tubing ... I know it comes in many sizes. Once you put it over your handle and reel base just lightly heat it and it should be secure. I've never done it but I've thought about it.

Use the tommy tape, I would wrap it over those sliding rod holders since they can come loose.  Tommy/silicone tape will never let go, plus it keeps you hand warm.

O-Rings, find the diameter hat is right for you set-up 3 or 4 or more on each side of the reel stem and you are in business, can be moved very easily to find the right balance.

Zip ties just make sure you tighten it so the "buckle" doesn't rub on your hand

I've used Coban  (self adhesive medical tape) for few years now. I like it. It really secures the reel and no sticky reel seat when you remove it. it comes in pretty colors too  ;D

shrink tubing works great  the reel stays very tight  and the tubing weighs nothing

I am using a self-fusion silicone tape on all my St. Croix's. I got a couple rolls of it for Christmas and I figured what the heck I will give it a try. I really like it for this use. It only bonds to itself. The tighter you stretch the tape the more it adheres to itself.
