Mounting other people's fish.

Probably won't be able to get out on the ice this year as I want to get caught up this winter!

And the rainbow alevins, feeding brook trout, brown trout, and tiger trout fry are keeping me busy in the basement feeding them 8 to 10 times a day. In April I'll be adding cutthroats. Oh and 500 hybrid crappies and 300 tilapia feeding and doing partial waters changes every day in the basement too. But I do enjoy the live fish.

The taxidermy is a job now that I've been doing it going on 35 years. I don't hate it by any means, but I'm not tickled pink to start the work day every day like I was in the beginning.

Water temps dropped hard in the rivers here early.the excellent fall steelhead bite shutdown almost a month early and shoved them in the snaggy deep holes where i fish.made them super lethargic now.

Wishing i wasn't sitting on iceshanty right now but in my ice shanty doing what i love best. O yea and dumping the 2 feet of snow out of my hut in the back of my truck that i forgot to put cover on. Back at it tomorrow bright n early. I'll prob put some new line on after stretching them out the last few days

-10 this morning, a high of 6 and howling winds... I'm retired so I can pick a better day to hit the ice.

I finished painting my "Green Hornet" ice fishing rod. I put a couple more rod holders on my milk crate for my kayak. Rechecked a few of my ice rods. And I pick up some more provisions and working on them.

I helped Willard stoke the smokehouse. It's a slow go at these temps. Drove home to regroup for next weekend.

Called SusieQs to see if they had any chubs in the round for bait, kid said yep so I made the 90 minute detour. Well he was wrong, no chubs (or anything else) for bait. Talked to owner/operator and asked what else they might have fresh. Whitefish, salmon... nope. Ooooo, herring from Superior.

Hmmmm. Not in the round but still. Mark had just put a few hundred pounds in the brine tank (just salt for pre-smoking). I asked if he would mind if I picked through for some smaller stuff. I collected some gutted, head on herring (dozen and a half), selected some freshly smoked salmon (pepper and jerk) and checked out. Herring cost me 3 bucks. I'm going to process them like my usual deads in dry salt and then brine. I'm also going to "stuff" the empty cavity with a cheap hot dog to "round them out". I'll let yall's know how it turns out.

I moved 2 fermenting lagers from primary to secondary ferment and brewed my version of a Modelo Especial lager.
I brew after the end of deer season and the lagers will stay in the root cellar until early spring before bottling.
I'm also doing some modifications to the 1 man flip over shanty. We have to wait a bit for the snow to settle and/or melt before going out.
Kind of cold today, never went above +2 today.

If'n it was for me? You bet! I'm pretty much a broken hot button guy. Go through a pound or so of habbies every 2 - 3 weeks just with daily use. Got some "weaponized" peppers for fun and "special occasions".

For fish? I'm not sure they'd appreciate it...

But, you never know.

I love it. The dude that says he's happy about the Patriots win gets no love, none. I can't stand that team, and I probably won't watch the upcoming super bowl for the first time in my life. NFL sucks.

When I'm not on the ice, I'm cutting loads of firewood. I heat my house and shop with wood, with an outdoor boiler. Burning at a record pace with these temps we are seeing now, -18° this morning near Madison, WI. I'm off for the winter, so I go fishing when the barometer is in the zone. Tomorrow morning I'm off to fish before the next blast of snow hits us.
