Beaver tail
« on: Mar 03, 2020, 08:04 AM »
Has anybody else ever tried using the fat out of a beaver tail as bait??? I tried tipping my jig with it this past Sunday and I was completely amazed at how well it work. I caught over 30 dinks with it and never had to change the fat. It is very versatile and does not come off the hook. I also caught gills and trout with it. Would like to hear if there is any other success stories using beaver tail fat.

I have a beaver tail wallet that's pretty cool....   Never would have thought of using the fat for bait.

That's cool I just got a tail from a buddy that traps and cut a piece out of it. Might have to try dying some of it for next season seeing how ours is pretty much done here.

Cool wallet. Where do you get the tails tanned?

I send the pelts to a tannery, perhaps they could do the tails too.

Very few tanneries can properly handle a beaver tail and produce a product that can be turned into a wallet. I bought my beaver tail wallet from Glacier Wear.

I have tried beaver tail fat for bait, both natural from a tail of my own and the commercial BeaverTail bait that comes dyed. I had better luck on the commercial bait, but only tried either one once, so can't say that's definitive.

Hey all, so I was very pleased at how well beaver tail worked as bait last season, so this season, I am going to try and preserve it with fire brine and dye it at the same time. I want to see if this makes a difference or not with the reaction to the bait. Let me know what you think or if you have tried this and had success. Stay dry and tight lines.

I used it plain fresh off the tail last season it was completely impressed with it. Only needed on piece all day. It never tore or came off the hook and landed a good amount of fish with it.

What species are you targeting? I assume you can cut the chunks big or small enough to suit whatever you’re fishing for, just curious if perch would go for it.

Beaver Tail works great on perch, cut it a little bigger than the size of a maggot.

as said above. it works great for perch. I caught my limit of perch on just one piece of fat. They can't get it off the hook and they just keep biting it.

I don't see why not. It wiggles just like a spike or waxie. I have caught some slab gills with it.

Don't be like me, the instructions for the Gullickson beaver tail bait say to refrigerate for storage. Mine were just kept in my ice fishing bucket and turned brown over the summer. Store them right to use year after year.
