A gigantic blizzard to coincide with Friday the 21st?? Those dopey Mayans!!!!

Copy of NOAA statement just issued:

IT CAN NOT BE STRESSED ENOUGH THE SEVERITY AND HISTORICAL NATURE
OF THE SITUATION FOR THOSE LIVING IN SOUTHEAST MINNESOTA AND
NORTHEAST IOWA...INTO SOUTHWEST AND CENTRAL WISCONSIN. PROTECT
YOURSELF AND OTHERS BY STAYING HOME...GETTING TO YOUR TRAVEL
DESTINATION BEFORE THE SNOW BEGINS...AND PREPARING NOW FOR
SIGNIFICANT BLOWING/DRIFTING AND WHITEOUT CONDITIONS. ROAD CREWS
WILL NOT BE ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH THE INTENSE SNOW RATES. STAY OFF ROADS. 10-15" OF BLOWING SNOW WILL CAUSE EXTREME WHITEOUT CONDITIONS.

10-15"? my 2wd 4.9 f150 loves a foot of snow! does much better than my brothers 4x4 5.0 when he is in 2wd, but seriously a foot aint the end of the world, a 90 degree heat way right now... that would be too much for the world to take

BUT......it' on top of ice JUST forming, it's been very warm here.....we had this happen last year, and then the ice does NOT form, as the snow insulates it, vehicles can't get on it to plow...resorts lose tons of money, and on and on....

its been raining in maine for 2 days so at least we dont have to worry about the ice being covered, and my yard formed a new pond! doubt there are any fish though...

10- 15 inches of wet heavy snow will make early ice bad in a hurry,its looking like that storm will just brush us north of duluth. I was on 7" today and dont want any more snow on it yet.
I suspect there will be quite a few guys heading north this year for good ice.

Dang guys! That really sucks... Well... I'm off to the lake to do some ice fishing tomorrow. Let me know how it all turns out for you.

Just come out west. I got a huge parking lot for you to put your campers for free and you can get some sanity back!

if you are just starting to get ice, i wouldn't worry. I'd think the weight of 12-15 inches of snow would be enough to completely sink skim-1" of ice. Here in East Central Iowa we don't have any yet, but after this storm accuweather says there isn't really a day above freezing for the next 25 days, yay for ice!!!

We are ok for ice here and our closest ice road is going to open for business this weekend.
Ice is going to be about 2' thick in most places by now.

* HEAVY SNOW WILL FALL TONIGHT INTO TOMORROW AFTERNOON.

* 10 TO 16 INCHES OF SNOW IS EXPECTED TO FALL.

* SUSTAINED WINDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 40 MPH WILL ACCOMPANY THE HEAVY SNOWFALL... PARTICULARLY TOMORROW MORNING AND AFTERNOON. BLIZZARD AND WHITEOUT CONDITIONS WILL OCCUR WITH VISIBILITY DROPPING BELOW A QUARTER OF A MILE.
