Title: New Gear for 2019/2020 Season
Post by: laer0302 on Jun 07, 2019, 03:24 PM
We had a thread last summer for new gear for the upcoming season, but I haven't seen one for this year yet. Anyone find any new gear yet? I heard Clam is going to be revamping their flip over shelters, but I haven't been able to confirm that. Maybe they are adding side doors like everyone else has now.

Almost 90 degree's here in central MN today, ice season can't get here soon enough!

I am not at liberty to say anything yet but can say this, Clam does try to change things up each year on some models. most changes are new colors or slight redesigns or renamed from one name to a new name. on  a opposite note Clam will discontinue certain houses from year to year if they are under preforming on sales.  as for side doors Clam does have that in their X300 since they released that two seasons ago as to if it will carry over to a few other house it might with time as it would require a pole redesign to make it work for the smaller houses like the X200 or the Voyager. I will get the full run down come August when they hold Pro Day and go over all the new products with the Pro Staff. once Pro Day is over I can give more details on the new line up.

Looking out for the first reports of a design change in the Eskimo Pistol Bit auger with a power point for sale.

Spoke with a MKE Electric Tool engineer who said they're overwhelmed with how may drills they sell for use in ice fishing. Said Mke is looking into a more powerful motor that would be more specific to our market.

I heard a rumor on the street that the "green" auger company will be coming out with an auger bit for drills. Guess we will see if something comes out.

Sounds like the next 3 years we will see a serious shift in auger tech. The last two have been ramping up but now its really going.

Wow, you don’t get it!  You buy for summer in the winter and for winter in the summer!  You’re paying a premium buying summer gear in the summer!  No wonder you have you undies in a wad!  LOL!

According the HT sales rep at the St Paul ice show last year, they will have an 8 inch Nero auger out this year, and a drill adapter similar to the Clam Plate as well. These were both leaked last year in the Reed's catalog, but should be available this year.

I have nothing to base this off of but I heard from 2-3 different people that the rumor was floating around that Vexilar was coming out with a digital series sonar system this year. Take it for what it is. Hondex 775/881 I would assume what it’s going to look like.

They've created an Archangel ice rod and paired it with a Freefall reel in a new combo.  That won't be a cheap date.  I'd be surprised if it retailed for less than $225.  The open water sized Archangel's full retail was $650.  The new Fuse rods (limited edition and numbered) are going to retail for $450.

Was the rod you an Archangel ice rod?

I've been using those micro bait feeder reels for the last few years, They're awesome. It was something I adapted from saltwater fishing but they are great through the ice. I only use them on warm days when the holes aren't freezing over or inside the shanty. Once the hole freezes over the setup is useless.

So I just got home from the Clam Pro Staff social event and let me tell you I think people will like what is come out from Clam this year. let's just say there is two big changes that people should like when it comes to some of the houses this year but I can't disclose details until tomorrow after pro day or for sure on Saturday. once I can talk about it I will post some pics of some of the new stuff. let's just say some of my old gear will be going up for sale and will be replaced with a bunch of the new stuff this year. with that said if you happen to be in Minnesota and want a good deal on a couple different houses I will be putting up for sale you can always  PM me and ask which of my old houses or gear I have for sale. PS Clam website should be live and updated with the new items by hopefully this coming Monday or maybe even this weekend or if lucky tomorrow so keep a eye out for it.

yes it is up now but not completely just couldn't come out and say it but since you mentioned it I can reply limitedly as tomorrow is the Pro Day and new product run down for the Pro Staff. there is still a section of stuff for tricking out your trap that will need to be added(things like rod holders, cargo nets and such not on the site yet so keep checking back for those items). yes the new door system on some of the houses is the feature I was referring too plus the floor option add on for some of the houses too.

Those Okuma micro baitfeeders are on my must buy list this year. Guess I have to wait until September to get them. Have used the 20 sized for open water fishing for years. Since I only fish for panfish. The 20 sized one always felt too clunky for ice fishing. Should make the dead stick as deadly as possible.

I got to test these last year and Rail Shad is now my go to smallmouth and walleye lure.

Is it just me or are Clams answer to side doors absolutely ridiculous? IMO that is a horrible design and will be a pita to get in out out of. You will still have to move the flasher and the heater as it will be in the way, and if you don’t move the heater, the door will get it. You still have to open up the front door anyway as it’s all one door. Absolutely horrible IMO.  Otter is definitely on top when it comes to side doors. Clams answer is, well, Clam.

On the ice we know Salmo for the Chubby Darter. This year at iCast they release a game changing ice and open water lure. The NEW Salmo Rail Shad.
I got to test these last year and Rail Shad is now my go to smallmouth and walleye lure.

About clam products, you guys realize that clam doesn't really make anything.
They just buy tents from mass production in China and stamps CLAM on them.

the tents are not mass produced as you don't see the same patterns on other brands out there. also if you haven't noticed the look of the tent is changed up a little each year. new this year is the Side Symmetry Door System which is patented now and will not be seen on other brands.   Clam has select manufacturers they work with over there. Clam designs everything then before anything gets produced it must get signed off on by R&D before they run the whole production lot.

Gotta be about time for them to change battery design so everyone has to get new augers when their batteries die

13 Fishing's patent on the trigger style in line reels must've expired.. Sportsman's Direct has a new one of these this year as well:

Same price as the cheaper Clam offering.

Doubt they ever had/got a patent. A patent is good for 20 years from the date of application.

I agree.....lol. At least they attempted to be innovative....fail.

I can't understand why they offer 100 different similar shacks......I mean **censored**....

Clam really has been a disapoint ment for about the last 7years. Back in the day they were pretty good......now innovation seems to escape them. It is basicly a company that buys products from others rebrands and doubles the price. When the leech flutter spoon came out......I was like **censored**.....I bought that off amazon last year for 1/3 the price they want.....it's not a "new" spoon......just a rebranded one.

I think what disappoints me most about clam is the failure to be innovative in areas they could have excelled in.

For instance the clam plate was a solid product.....started at $45 now we're up to $90? Once we found the drills able to turn the augers and batteries, a lot of us fell in love with them.....what's clam do with this.....drops the ball. Totally fails at the gear box. Then doesn't even pay attention to the light weight craze and look into a synthetic auger for the plate....I mean **censored**?

If I was clam, I would have a perfect clam plate by now. I would have a quick grab/release for holding the drill on it. I would have an optional gear box to turn a 10in auger.  (My Milwaukee 1200 can turn a 10in mora but it works it) Then a lineup of 3 light synthetic augers a 6in, 8in, and 10in. All 3 would have an option of a drill plate, and hand auger crank on them. All augers would have a center point, and run the hybrid shaver/chipper blades.

I'd make a normal sled in ALL the flip overs. FLAT from front to back....so u can move your seat all the way to each end.

I'd improve the center counsel in the flipovers with some lids to secure stuff.

I'd make a more comfortable seat with gel foam padding....it be like dang near sleeping in a bed for a guy's rear.

I would contract Adam Bricker to truely make a custom clam rod series with limited numbers.

I would put hooks in the $4-$5 panfish lures that wouldn't snap off after 2-3fish.

Last but not least.....I would put out a quality product no mater what it was vs cheap crap and a high price.

I have 2 clams 1 is a 2008 X2 back then the tubs were extremely heavy , I have a newer 1 man like it but wish they made a sturdier tubs , JMO , they make to many choices , if they made fewer models and use that money to make better units to compete with otters and others  , this was mentioned to clam a few years ago , far as rebranding products,  companies have been doing that for soft and hard water forever ,
But things sure  have come a long ways in the last 5 decades 👍

According the HT sales rep at the St Paul ice show last year, they will have an 8 inch Nero auger out this year, and a drill adapter similar to the Clam Plate as well. These were both leaked last year in the Reed's catalog, but should be available this year.

They had the 8" available last year. I almost bought one until I talked with the gear buyer at my local store. He said about 40% of the 7" Nero augers would twist the main shaft.

Where did you see the 8"? I wasn't able to find it anywhere. It was mistakenly advertised in the Reeds catalog, but according to the rep, it won't be available until this year. I've used the 7" Nero for two seasons, and I love it. Cuts extremely fast. Other members have used them as well and love them.

I'm calling BS on the twisting of 40% of the 7" Nero shafts. Prove it. Post up some of the IceShanty Forum links from anyone who's experienced that first hand. You couldn't do it if you tried. Those things are made of STEEL. I've got two seasons of hard use including dirty ice on my Nero 7" and I'm still on the original set of blades unsharpened though I'll probably re-sharpen this Fall.
Reed's catalog just came today and it shows the 8" size as available. I like my 7" model enough that I'll be sticking with it.

That's a shame.  Fenwich Aetos is probably one of the best retail rods out there that was pioneering a unique niche.  A real jigging rod with an extra fast tip power.  They should've expanded the line up.

Brand loyalty,  profit margins,  personal opinion, ect. Sure seems like many pro staff out there are a bunch of "liars" endorsing cheap products to make a buck, wouldn't put it past a salesman to endorse the auger with the largest profit margin.

I've become cynical enough in recent years that if someone tells me that the sun rises in the east I'm going pause a moment to think about it. It's surprising how little motivation it takes to turn a man into a liar these days. Some people do it for recreation it seems. Let's go back to our Cub Scout days. Don't be a stealer. Don't be a liar. Don't hit girls.

Never see a knock off PK spoon.

However, I've picked up a few of the Cast Champ spoon packages that had a bunch of spoons in a package & they are knock of Acme Kastmasters at about 1/3 the price and work well.

I may be a guinea pig at that price point of the ice runner float suit.my strikers are falling apart and not forking that amount of coin out again for those.tho i got smoking deals on hardwater suits when korkys went under.99$ coats and 99$ bibs.bought 2 full suits.however those suits are too hot for me and wear my striker lite almost every time out and its been falling apart for years.

I'm in the same boat. I have a pair of the Striker Predator bibs. They are very warm, but very bulky and heavy when hole hopping. I'm looking for a lightweight float suit, and was looking at the Striker Trekker suit, but even that is still nearly a $400 investment for the jacket and bibs, it might even be more than that, been awhile since I checked the price. This is an excellent price point, I'll probably be buying the jacket for sure.

Never see a knock off PK spoon.

However, I've picked up a few of the Cast Champ spoon packages that had a bunch of spoons in a package & they are knock of Acme Kastmasters at about 1/3 the price and work well.

I have used these in open water with good results.  Add tape, feathered trebles, etc.

New float suit option

https://icerunnerhouses.com/float-suit/?

A float suit is at the to of my list for this season and I've looked at the Striker Predator suit at the local Cabelas but after reading several posts including Dr. Specklers about the durability, I'd like to see this suit being shown in the water.  They've got videos of their shantys but nothing on the suits.

Striker suits are pretty durable and if something were to happen they have good customer service. I don't think stores would have been selling out previous years if they weren't good suits..

Strikers stitching sucks! Mine was coming apart in the first winter and when I emailed, no response. So I went to there  booth at the ice show and talked to the owner and told him of the issues I was having. He looked at me and asked me if I know how to sew? Wouldn't do anything about it. Not sure where these reports of good customer service are coming from, really hard to imagine given my experience.  I learned in my experience that they have cruddy over priced suits they won't stand behind. Good luck to those that pay the price tag.

Maybe I don’t fish as much as y’all or something but my hard water suit I got from them is still going pretty strong. The only thing I can say is the hood zipper didn’t last the first year and now that it’s 7 yrs old it’s not so waterproof anymore. I’ve never spayed it with any thing and in the rain last year it was seeping. Called them was told to wipe clean and use sneaker waterproofing spay “ do not machine wash or dry” will continue doing business with them

Those 7" replacement blades are running $17.99/ pr. out of Reeds this year so you get the gold star for Mr. Thrifty Shopper. Import tariffs? I'd probably be more worried about HT Enterprises than about Volzhanka who makes those Neros in Russia.
so they are still half the price of any other replacement blades out there. im calling bs on the twisted nero shaft as well. there is zero chance i could twist that shaft by hand, and im a 350 lb powerlifter. i love my nero, was using my drill with it but it cuts so damn fast i just do it by hand. 20 in of ice take about 25 sec to cut. i strop blades regularly though. i wouldnt worry much about ht either they are everywhere. just my opinion.

I think Strikers customer service kinda blows. Yes, it is great as long as it’s still under warranty. Once the warranty is up, they can care less about you. I just sent an email asking if they’d replace the knee pads in my predator bibs. Two seasons old. They asked if I have the receipt and I said no, they are out of warranty but I will pay. And then they said they don’t do replacement knee pads.

I still stand by my orginal statement.  I had a issue with my jacket, but still mostly usable, emailed them, sent over the receipt like requested and had a brand new jacket at my door that week.  I may have even been outside of the warranty by a few months..  I'll support and recommend a brand as long as they continue to make good products and treat me right.

If you aren't willing to give them another chance look into strikemasters new suit, FXR, or norfin (top European brand for ice suits, just entered the US market, if they can hold up to the elements over there the US weather shouldn't be a problem).

Jackal Deracoup tail spinner.

I expect nothing but a mess of line tangle but I'm still gonna try to see if fish will bite it.  It's what tail spinners do when vertically jigged in an ice hole.  The spinner line tangles.

Right? Making two sizes smaller than the 1" z viber, that 1/2" is going to be so small. Could work good though.

Trying a new tip-up I came across, Forest City Trap. It will be odd one out on an experimental basis this year. Used a Indian Hill Trap for 2 seasons, but don’t see any promising activity for future purchases when needed. Using 40 Up Tip-ups purchased from JC Penny years ago when they had a sporting goods department for snow cover and Polars for when the surface is glass as my go to traps.

Had my first go at them last weekend and they worked great! Surprising how quickly they drop being plastic and weighted with lead. Action was great, thinking they are gonna be a hot lure for me this season! Threw that single hook they come with away. Sorry Eurotackle, the single hook is garbage.

As it goes that sometimes manufactures will allow a few people chosen to test their product out before the final release date.

I have been wearing a new pair of Ice Monkey Yeti Ice Fishing Gloves for a week now (5-13 Nov).

These will be my ice fishing gloves for this season so I have been wearing them shoveling snow to break them in. Really nice.

Easy to get on and off.  Waterproof, warm, and fit great.  I have used them with the Ice Monkey insert-gloves as well.

I am going to say they are better than my Striker Defenders and my Clam Ice Armors.  And cheaper than both.  75 for the Yeti Gloves and free inserts.

Looking over the Okuma Ice rods.  The Cold Water Ice rods appear to be most similar to St Croix Mojo Ice rods even the line guides have similar size and spacing.  The Inspira Ice rods appear to mimic 13 Fishing Tickle sticks with the flat tip.

What's a bit misleading is the picture that Okuma using to showcase the Cold Water ice rods.  They show 4 line guides plus tip guide.  However the actual rod itself is 3 line guides plus tip guide.

Makes me wonder if the rods did come from the same manufacturing plant.
