Shanty Tow Bar
« on: Feb 09, 2011, 08:20 PM »
I'm headed to Canada for a few days and borrowed a buddies 2 man Clam.  Can you make a legal tow bar out of a couple pieces of PVC over the rope?  Don't want to pop for a regular bar just for a few days use.  Want to comply with Canada law.  Any help would be appreciated.

I THINK you're wrong d.  Better check the regs but I've heard you will be fined with a pvc bar.

Thanks JJ, I'm going to take your advice.  I go to fish for the fun and I don't want a issue.  The CO's in Canada can play hardball.  I was fined one time because I asked a guy with me (had a Canada license and wasn't fishing) to watch my tip-up while I went up the lake.  The CO wrote me for an unattended tip-up.

I used some conduit I had sitting around. Crimped the ends in a vice and drilled holes for carabiners.

Rigid towbar means exactly that, not like a weiner with a vein in it.

Just curious, but what is the reason a "rigid" tow bar is neede in Canada?

Its required in New York as well. It prevents the tow rope from being tangled or wrapped around ATV tires or snowmobile tracks etc.

"Only" required in NY, "if" you are towing a person.

But then last year while fishing Wamplers lake the ice was polished with no snow and the wind picked up and was blowing in the same direction I was traveling. My Frabill was trying to pass me on my way in and the tow bar got into the tire and flipped the shanty and bent the towbar. So my question is this: why would state law make such a law?  I now always carry to 30 inch black rubber bungee cords for this senario, hook one on each side of the shanty and stretch and hook them to the rack on the ATV, problem solved but did we really need a new law for that? Hmmmmm

I bought one and was never checked at Simcoe.  I felt better that I was in full compliance with the  law.

Again..... pulling a sled, alone, no tow bar needed.
Put a body in the sled/shanty, then a tow bar is needed.

If you're pulling your shanty, by rope, onto the ice and you're fishing alone, nobody else is with you as you venture onto the ice, you are in full compliance.
