How is the ice????/
« on: Jan 18, 2006, 01:06 PM »
Is there any Ice in Northern Iowa? I would like to plan a weekend trip some where but I dont know where to go. Can any body help me out? I am from South west Iowa and there is no ice. I really want to catch some walleyes or perch through the ice. I have never done that before.

Thanks,

Adam

Ice up here around Clear Lake is doing real well around 12"... just watch out for the aerators on the lake (hard to miss them though).  Clear Lake has some decent walleyes plus lots of little walleyes also.  They have been catching some decent yellow bass also.  I have heard that there are some perch down at Cornelia lake & Morse lake down by Belmond (which would be up to you ;D

Good luck in the fishing and let us know how you do!

devil_mechanic... or should it be green devil_mechanic?   :D  Anyways, I am from Mason City, I have been doing all of my fishing at Clear Lake.  But have several friends that ice fish also so I get lots of information from them and where is good to go and where it isn't so hot.  I guess that one of my friends have taken a few crappies out of the black pit in Mason City.  It is the pit just west of the big blue pit.  I also know that the DNR stocks trout in the big blue pit but I haven't tried it at all this winter.  I was out over at Clear Lake last night with several buddies of mine and we caught over 12 crappies (one measured over 13").  So you could say that they were decent sized.

Hey ICEMAN good job on the crappies!!!     Were you guys fishing north and west of the island, or do you have a secret spot to catch them that you would rather not let out. Did you catch them after dark? Hope to make it up there this weekend. Hope to run into some of you "ICE SHANTY" folks .

crowbait... thanks for the comment.  I went out again last night with a couple of my ice fishing buddies.  There were two of us in the shanty and we got 15 crappies by 8:00 pm (cause that is when I left).  Some of the other guys friends were in a shanty right by us and he had a few crappies and a real nice yellow bass.  Oh yeah he also caught a real nice and fat perch.  We are using vexilar's, the only way to go.  I currently do not own one as this is my first year of ever ice fishing.  I have to say that I now addicted to it!  So I plan on picking up a vexilar this weekend some time.  It sure is fun out there when the fish are biting.

oh yeah, to answer some of your questions crow bait.  I (or we) caught the majority of them right around sunset to about an hour after sunset.  It then kind of slows down and you see a couple of them come by on the vexilar.  But it does get rather slow after about 7:00pm.  Fishing right around the island.  Just using what I call crappie minnows.  Some of the other guys are using the wax worms and that is what they caught the yellow bass and perch on.  Hope that helps out and let's hear how you do... good luck everyone!! ;D

Has anyone tried George Wyth?  I have been fishing Brinker Lake and have had some luck.  Last Saturday I pulled up a 4LB cat. Nice fight.  The week before got a 13 in walleye.  Several decent gills, some nice crappies.  I am in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area, and am looking for some new spots to try.  I am new to ice fishing this year, and I am hooked!!
A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work!!

Popped a test hole NW of the island on Clear Lake last night an 10"-12" of ice.
No problem.
Be careful around the aerators. Had some people and a quad go in already.

Peace Man!

Silver Lake in Palo Alto county had over 12" of ice yesterday and North Twin in Calhoun county had 5-6" off the boat ramp in Featherstone Park

I didn't have much luck. This past weekend there were several dozens shelters out on the ice, so something must have been biting. I've been hearing the perch were a little bigger 8-10", witha few larger ones.
