« on: Jan 16, 2019, 06:17 AM »
Guys use your head out there. Im fishing ogdensburg this morning and there was a breakaway.. there are 2 guys stranded out on the ice with a massive gap between them and good ice. Rescue squad on site. THIS RIVER IS NO JOKE. Exercise caution..

Just asked in the Northern NY thread if anyone heard of a shack going through between the 'berg and Waddington and then I saw this. Guess this is what was going on.

We last saw the shack going under the bridge.. had a  marcum LX7 inside it.. im not sure if the guy went down to chimney point or the beach to try and see if he could get his stuff or not. I think it all eventually went under... cause it was so windy the floating ice was breaking up.

My wife and her father were on 37 when they met a crap load of EMS vehicles. They detoured them onto the Lisbon road to avoid whatever was going on. Glad everybody is safe, but it does suck to lose your stuff too. Just hope people don't start pushing the envelope with this cold weather giving a false sense of security, especially on the big river like you said.

Really glad everyone is OK and the only thing lost was a little equipment.
Two things I always paid attention to on the river bays - when the shipping season ends and the wind direction.
Especially those bays that are wide open to the river.
1. - The wind can blow it out.  Early ice is especially susecptible.
2. - Large ship waves can come in and break up the ice.

Early winds this AM had some south in them.

Yesterday morning and the night before the SW wind was howling and that in turn pushes water to our end of lake Ontario which as a result raises river levels in some circumstances by feet. This plus the switch in wind direction is always a recipe for disaster on the river. I have lived on her shores my entire life and can attest to her wicked games. Glad everyone is ok but there is a valuable lesson to be learned here.

Definitely was 15-20mph on the river yesterday morning. Last time we had that ice was breaking up and people were floating away.

And the wind was from off shore "South".  Been North (blowing ice into shore) for 2 days now.
Like I said, wind out of the south, stay off those bays that open to the river.  Especially "new" ice.

Just my observations from 50 years of fishing them.
