will this weekend ruin our season??
« on: Jan 15, 2019, 06:45 AM »
We are right on the cusp of having a great ice season with a major cold snap coming, and now 20 inches of snow is expected to fall on the finger lakes area. We will not see another inch of ice formation with an insulating cover like that. Lets all hope it stays as smooth as it is, and we don't get any sticky stuff and the high winds will keep it cleared. Whats the latest everyone has heard?

I'm not sure about all that....A few years ago when we had that kick-ass snowy cold winter I was cutting though 15-16" of ice

It's going to be what it will be, I'll take it as it comes. No need to stress what we can't control. I do hope we're spared, but no it won't ruin our season.

Not to worry.  A little "decorative" amount of snow around here happens quite frequently.  All indicators point towards a long successful ice fishing season for our area.

Just as lake George freezes. 20 inches of snow on top of less then 5 inches is a recipe for machines going through the ice because no one is going to want to walk through that and everyone is biting their fingernails to get out there. Time to build my smitty sled.

Im also building a smitty for my huge frabill sidestep flipover its 70in long by almost 3ft wide and not easy to drag through the snow. Now I just need to find long enough ski's for it

Try putting a post on Facebook asking if anyone has old skis laying around.  I had a response within two minutes!
Goin' where the wind don't blow so strange,
Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain.

Now we are assuming forecasters are right?

Maybe if we wear our onesies inside out it won’t snow. Or put a lift kit on our accords. That should keep it away!

Not sure about y'all but I prefer a light dusting on the ice for the walk out. Makes it a bit less slippery for me. However, if the winds come howlin' it should keep the snow manageable. If not, skis make it much easier and can usually be found for free or cheap at thrift stores.

You wear a onesie?  Kinda weird if ya ask me.  I dont own any of those and gave the accord to my brother.  Guess its 20" of snow then.

You guys are funny. I remember fishing up on lake George after a huge February Snow storm. Snow was over 2 feet deep on the ice. We had to trample down paths just to put our tip-ups out.  Best day of laker fishing I ever had up there.  ;D

I was trying to remember the most snow I had ever seen on the ice.  One time I cleared an area for our big shanty and it was like wow watching the water flow up out of a hole we drilled.  It made a pond where I shoveled so we moved the shanty and when we caught fish we'd toss the keepers into that pond.  It was comical watching our crappies swimming around on top of the ice.
