Had one take me all the way to the bottom 😎
Imagine my surprise when a 23 incher popped out. Seems like the 23-24 inch class was really strong this year
-
Looks like you guys did pretty well. It was a great season to say the least.
-

Ty Jeff. Your trip was surprisingly productive. I thought those pike would be busy doing it...apparently not!

Nice lakers, I have smoked white fish, bows, and northerns, but I would love to smoke a laker. Bet they would smoke great.

Lakers are great smoked.
Pretty much the only way to make them palatable if you ask me.

Pretty much the only way to make them palatable if you ask me.
Baked smothered with mayo, onions, spices, and butter. Comes out real well if not over cooked.
-
Put an 15- 20 incher on the BBQ (that's assuming they're legal where you fish) Smother him in red wine & vinegar dressing before and during cooking. Keep the fire down so you don't burn the skin off and turn often. When the skin falls off he is done and ready for the table. Anything bigger than 20" inches is a little strong for my taste but that's just a personal opinion and a lot of other folks would not mind I'm sure. They do take longer to cook when heavier and you may end up with one under cooked when it appears done. Good luck and they are best when cooked fresh.
-
Don't mean to start a war or any thing, but in my humble opinion the best Laker will never compare to a fried Blue Gill or Bullhead. Sorry... that's just the way I taste it
-
For lakers I usually sauté them in open oxygen for about 15-20seconds , season with shards of ice from around my hole , take it by the tail either side is fine and I’ll dip the head gently into the freezing water aNd wait for it to kick...90% of the time works every time 😃
-
I hear that . If your not really into them let them go for the guy who is. Putting them into a freezer until your wife gets tired of moving them around does no justice to a beautiful fish. let them swim

Same recipe I use. It is amazing how they plump using this method.

Is that thing 14 inches long or are you using an open water rod? ;D

Or walleye or perch and so on ...... now try one of the Atlantic Salmon out of Lake George and you're in for a treat @)

I agree other fish taste better, but lakers are not garbage fish like some think. Guess it's just the way you cook it. Never had any complaints, just compliments.
John, next time I smoke some up, I'll try to get you some.

Surf rod on ice!
-
There's a guide on here from NH who uses open water rods because the little ones aren't compliant with some record keeping organization and he wants his catches to be eligible.
I couldn't imagine using a 5' rod ice fishing
-
First fish I caught through the ice ever was on a 5' quantam ultralight. Didnt have ice gear back then...got an invite and used the ultralight to swim a bait. 35" pike ate it LOL!
-
I need something that fits a little better in my 1 man

I remember in the Old Days using 7' rods for Walleyes where you would sweep the pimple 10' off the bottom and let it flutter back down. And guys used long flexible "Blue Gill Rods" with light tips to fish for Crappie. Would think it would still work today and maybe for Lakers also.

Yes back in the 50's and early 60's a lot of guys used 5' rods before the short ice fishing gear got popular. Know 1st hand watched my dad do it.

Yea the huts made it necessary. I'm afraid I go back that far and Conesus Lake's Owner's Assoc, passed a law that NO wind breaker of any kind (not even long coats that would spread out when you sat down) were allowed.
