Title: Sumthin to do While You Wait for Ice
Post by: uncleshorty on Jan 12, 2023, 11:57 AM
Here's a chance to learn to tie flies for free.

And yes, there are flies that can be used under the ice... if it every gets cold enough to have ice in PA again...

Hey Salty, that's a lot of canning.   I thought I did well putting up 72 pints of salsa.   Way to go!   Pressure or water bath?

I am going to fish the river fed ponds of the Connecticut River this week end in Vermont . Since the lack of ice here , it will be brutal with the Sat. morning low prolly close to 20 below 0 , glad I don't have to work anymore .

Nice Salty.  I pressure can raw vegetables and water bath salsa and other high-acid items.   Gardening is as relaxing as fishing, although a bit more work.  But the rewards are way worth the effort.  I'm a big garlic grower too.  Put in about 300 head.  Give away probably 290  ;D

You are very welcome.    70 tomato plants....sheesh.  I do 20 and it seems like a lot, but my wife takes extras over to her hair salon and the customers love them.  Nothing beats a home grown tomato for taste.  Same with the garlic.  Hope you have a great growing season.

This makes me laugh as I was raised on a farm and still have a couple plants every year in suburbia. I can't even eat the tomatoes my wife makes me buy this time of year.

Now that brings back memories.   My mother used to can green tomatoes.   They were spicy and sooo good.   I may have to resurect that tradition.

I have my grandson coming over this weekend. I have a dozen Port Orford cedar shafts and all the fixings and I'm am going to teach him how to make arrows. We were pretty rough on his arrows last week when we were shootin in the backyard! Lots to do when not on the ice.  ;)

I use slip floats for ice fishing so I made up some of my own 'custom designed'  :) clip on floats that should work better than those rinky dink foam ones. Look a lot better for sure----mine are made from cedar.

Tomatoe Pickles? 🤔 Sounds intriguing!
I make them like refrigerator pickles. Make like a 2 gallon jar at a time. Put a hot pepper 🌶 in & sometimes other things like onion or string beans.

I’m done waiting for ice. I am open water fishing. Catching gills at my usual winter spots. I’m used to not having ice. It’s been like this the last 5 years in Se Pa.

Thanks for the picture.  We need something to pick our spirits up with this lousy weather.  That almost looks too good to eat.  Question:  Do you cook on the ice (when we have some)?  That is one of my favorite things about ice fishing.

We have some some real nice creek chubs..in 50 gallon drum with our spring running in on them..My husband isn't ready to throw in the towel just yet with them..We trap for them.
Title: Re: Sumthin to do While You Wait for Ice
Post by: PaCarpboy on Feb 14, 2023, 04:17 PM
There is nothing better than creek chubs.   So lively.  Problem is, I can't catch them!   Years ago, probably around 45, before I was married, my friend and I used to trap tons of creek chubs in the winter.  We would chop a hole through the ice in a big pool and put the traps in overnight and find 20 or 30 in the morning in each trap.  I went back to the same exact creek, same traps, same bait, and cannot catch a one.  Tried multiple other deep pools in other areas of the creek, and nada.  Don't know what happened.   Just disappeared.   Shners are not nearly as good.

SIQ, you should open up a restaurant!   That sandwich looks soooooo good.   How do you get the pickles to be crunchy when canning?  Pickle crisp?  Grape leaf?
And thanks for the comment on my grandkids.  They are so much fun and another one on the way in April.

Grandkids bring back all the memories from raising yours.  Makes you feel both old and young.  My two are very special.  Aren't everyone's, right?   Well, there's a story behind both.  But they are as fun and smart as they come.   Only get to see them in person once in a while as they live in Pinehurst, NC.   I'll be going down after the next one is born.  My wife more than that.
You and your husband are so fortunate to have that kind of environment.  All you need is a big pond full of crappie and perch and you'd be all set.
Take care

thanks Rutt, He was a happy kid but that wasn't his whole day. He has many talents and grammy helped with one of the others. He is quite the chef and ever since he had some macarons at a fancy restaurant he has been dying to recreate them. He and Connie made a batch of very fancy macarons that came out great. Turns out there is a lot of prep and wait stuff involved in making French pastry! Who knew?

Thanks! Yes he was. We had to go right out back and test fire them and they flew beautifully he even nailed several bullseyes. Then we went inside and taste tested macarons  ;D

It was also my sons birthday, so when they came over to pick up their boy we had a birthday party with fresh banana cake and homemade vanilla ice-cream. It was a great day. And to top it all off, Ryan is coming over this morning so he and gram can make Italian macarons this time! I'm kinda thinking about ducking out of work early but I don't want to steal any of grams funtime.

Great pic Spider.  You have a talent and nice that you are passing it along to your grandson. Same for Grams.  Those are life lessons well worth the time.  Wish my grandkids were closer.  Would be fun to have him out on the ice with us.  Maybe next year we can take him to the resort and watch him catch those big crappies, perch, and bass.

He went to Hawaii last year and did some fishing. Caught some Mahi Mahi and an Ahi tuna (yellow fin). They butchered the ahi right there and he ate some. Kids gonna own a big restaurant some day.

I went home for lunch today, they had 4 batches of Macrons done, both French and Italian. The French were good but the Italian were something to see. I told the Mrs to take a pic and send it to me when they are done so I can show off my kid to you all.

That's a nice meal right there.  Love those crappies.  I'm sure you have a special recipe for them.  I just roll them in flour, dip in egg, then coat with Panko seasoned bread crumbs and fry in a cast iron skillet for just a few minutes on each side.   Nothing better.

Last week I went to one of my local lakes to try for some perch, bluegills crappies in a tiny piece of open water. I ended up with these.

Yes! The Trout Snobs turn their nose up at them, but there’s nothing better on the other end of your line this time of year! 😜 They usually put up a good fight.

Nicely done Chapru! Rutt! Trout snobs must not know how to cook a trout if they turn their nose up at them. More for me! Especially after the state hatcheries changed feed regiments last year making their meat even more appealing, even tougher now to put 'em into the smoker and not right on the grill.

Thanks, but the catch was incidental. I’d have rather had perch that size. And yes RuttNutt, they did put up a nice fight on ultralight.

I love trout, I just don't eat them.   I especially love the wild trout in the Upper Delaware River on a 4wt flyrod, 2lb tippet, and a #18 BWO.  A 16" wild rainbow will take you across the river deep into your backing.  No better sound in the world than a screaming fly reel as they peel line off so fast water is shooting off it like a rooster's tail.

Carpboy, if you love fishing for wild trout you should try out some of the Keystone Select waters. If you haven't heard or seen about them, they are the place to find monster browns and rainbows, easily find 20"+ fish. There's some sprinkled all through out the state, in my back yard I have a nice mile section.

All these photos of monster bucks really make me feel some sorta way for missing one in archery this year, and then not seeing another for the next 10+ times out in the woods.  :'(

Thanks SteidyJ.  I have fished Penn's Creek near Milheim.  Was in October and was so low I had no idea how fish could live there until I found a deeper run and had a blast with some very large browns on tiny dries.  I was impressed.  I can see why it draws a crowd during the green drake hatch.  Thanks again and keep your line in the water!

For sure Carp, I know of Penn's from my time at PSU, never dunked a line in there, now I am wishing I had!, not like I had that many skunk days with the density of PA's stocked waters. But I was always looking for different creeks while I was there, everyone and their cousin raving about Spring Creek this, fisherman's paradise that, had no desire to fish there surrounded by my closest 40,000 friends. Absolutely loved bushwacking Rothrock and Black Mo and finding a deep blue hole to spend some time admiring.
Wish I would've gotten the chance to meet you and RN on the hard water this year, maybe some open water opportunities will have our paths/lines cross!

Appreciate it SteidyJ.  My open water is usually restricted to fly fishing the Delaware River and occasionally the Lackawanna River which is in my backyard.  But the Big D is my sanctuary.  If you are ever in the mood to take a trip up to the Hancock, NY area for some wild trout, drop me a line.  I have a camper on right on the Delaware across the river from Hancock.  I used to go there almost once per week, but my fishing friend was unable to physically make it the past 5 years and then passed away. I have been to the camper once this past year to fish and none the two prior years other than to open it up and close it.  Sad.  PM me if you want contact info

Rutt, you are always welcome to fish the West Branch of the Delaware river with me at the camper.  I have enough fly rods, reels, and flies to get you on the water.  You can even fish for walleye, smallies, stripers, and shad with regular gear when the time is right.  Mostly fish for those on the main stem down river a bit.

“Something to do while you wait for ice”..............well, I got to meet Steidyj tonight and put a face to a name. We were hoping to do so on the ice somewhere this season but that just didn’t happen. So fortunately he lives in the same town as my mom and I came down here today to take her to a medical appointment.

We met at the local brew pub and shared stories. And hopefully we will meet again soon with fishing rods in our hands instead of beer glasses!  ;) ;D

NICE to meet you Jake! Looking forward to doing some fishing next time instead of just talking about it!  ;D

Depends on what the water tells us Spider.  Trout feed under the surface most of the time, but I happen to be a dry fly fisherman, so I am always hunting for risers.  There are no restrictions on what you can fish with so any rod and reel method is legal.   Sorry Rutt, jaw-jackers won't work.

Thanks for getting me out of the house Rutt (SNAKEBITE)! What a wild story and experience that was! Very much looking forward to finding some scaley critters with you!

Tying flies is a lot of fun and there's something special about catching a fish on something you tied. One thing I want to get more into this year is streamers! Last year was Euro-Nymphing and I've got that to a proficient level, but I really want to find some Susqy, Skook, or Lehigh 16"+ fish with a streamer. Nothing beats the chase and strike of a streamer, but I could make an argument that risers after a dry get your heart going just as much Carpboy!

To say the least very excited for spring to sprung and might be putting some hours on the waders this weekend!

You need a valid passport and also need to submit to a complete strip search at the customs stations on the border of PA / NY at all major crossings in order for you PA guys to extend your season and fish in a real ice fishing state that has ice. We will take your money if you really like ice fishing as much as you claim to. I have my doubts about that. Hardwaterhonkey drives farther than you do to get to good ice

Fishing almost close to good spots isn’t fishing, it’s wishing. I really want to extend my season but praying a big fish comes to my sub par safe ice location isn’t doing it for me. Sad panda for sure but hopefully it’s not the last winter we see. I put my stuff away and looking forward to spring. Only one major trek to chaumont and I messed up 2 opportunities so I will need to stew on that a while. LAMENT is the descriptor that I am using for 2022/23 ice. Coulda shoulda woulda in December but then the weather decided not this year. Cudos to those that got out and had success. I am chalking up an L for this season.

I told you guys back on December -19th -2022 that the cold wave that ran all the way to Mexico would break the jet stream and would give you 2 days of cold at Christmas then that would set the stage for all other cold air this winter. It is only the east that didn't have much of a winter. The west had a very harsh and snowy winter , with record cold and snow in Arizona , California , Utah , Wyoming , both Dakotas, and Oregon , just not us .

Thanks HHH, yeah we are fortunate that we have so many various types of fishing we can keep ourselves busy with! I really enjoy tying nymphs, and leeches, both work pretty well for nymphing. I have tied some dries but they are definitely more tedious and technical and I haven't mastered tying those, and I lucked into a large assortment of various flies from a past friend that tied new ones every year so I haven't even gotten through that stock pile yet.

How'd you make out Yote hunting Rutt!? Hopefully thinned the pack a bit, this warm winter sure didn't slow them down at all!

I agree Spider.  I have never been a big fan of social media but thought a site about ice fishing for those that enjoy pursuing the sport would get together like-minded individuals to discuss a shared recreational pastime.  Seems some take it a bit too seriously as if life revolves around them and whether they fish better waters, catch more, or think they are simply superior to all others at something as humble as ice fishing.  They must get dizzy.  I enjoyed a lot of conversations with some good people but it doesn't take many to make it intolerable.  I am kind of glad the ice fishing forum season has come to an end.  Sadly glad.  For those of you that want to correspond, send me a PM and I will respond.   SIQ, I owe you some garlic bulbs this year for planting.  Keep in touch.  Peace

Parents are in lackawaxen if you wanna get out on the lower section for pellet head season let me know! The dries are tough I don’t do them with the hackle gauge and this and that too much! It's all good.  Just one of those testy ice seasons.   I love to tie flies, especially parachutes and hackle spinners.  I think that even if I didn't fish, I would still tie flies. There's a sense of accomplishment to see a thing made of string and feathers come to life.  The Lackawaxan is a beautiful river.  It's a shame the release from the Pack is not a bottom cold water release.  It could be a decent tailwater fishery from Kimbles bridge down.   Looking forward to a good early dry fly season on the Delaware.  Climate change has even impacted the hatches.  Seem to be earlier every year.  Happy thoughts and tight lines boys and girls!

Brookfield sucks in that aspect they hold water back a ton and then when they release it you have a 5 foot surge in river I’ve walked those tracks on the far side for miles until I got back to the fire house and was able to cross! They jerk that river around way too much it’s not about the fish or the fisherman there sadly, be well carp tight lines!

Since I was 18 , 47 years ago I have never been did I say NEVER BEEN - UNARMED when I fish or icefish .

Same here-although a bit later for me. Mid 20’s................but I was a boy scout so I’m always “prepared!”  ;)

Wow- didn’t know you tie your own flies too George! Must be cool to catch a fish on a fly you tied yourself.............. .. @)

Definitely looking forward to doing some fly fishing this Spring! 👍
Already talking to Spider and Icehound about it.................... .....

At one time, I was building my own fly rods, but have not built one in years.  I still remember the first wild trout I caught on the first rod I built.  It was 1990 on the W. Branch of Delaware at Balls Eddy.   Looks like HHH builds some nice ice fishing rods.  Might give that a try next year.    Can't wait to get you guys up to the camper on the Delaware.  I am offering $20 for the first guy that falls in above their waders.    ;D  Should be a good time with some food, drinks, and maybe a fish or two thrown in.

Rutt, it is fun to catch fish in my own flies as you said, but much more rewarding when others catch fish on them.  Hope that happens.

Thanks HHH I will keep that in mind as spring trout is right around the corner! Have some streams and rivers in central PA I gotta get some time on this year! Best of luck to you with the fast approaching season!
Had a buddy of mine make an 11' euro rod last year, might have to get some info from him because even buying used rods it gets expensive quick!
Carp & Rutt, it is a ton of fun to catch with your own tied flies/rigs, gives a sense of accomplishment and pride that is unmatched. Definitely smart to "Be Prepared" when out in the woods, and the BSA gives a great start. I was 2" away from being underwater in my waders last year, but the dangerous part was we were floating the lehigh for Good Friday, thought I had enough height to jump out and fish an inrush from a creek and nearly went under. Wouldn't of been a fun rest of the float had I gone under, don't know how I woulda even pulled myself up back onto the pontoon. So in short, you can keep ya 20$! ill trade dry shorts for a hamilton any day of the week  :roflmao:

Will definitely be a good time whenever we get the whole “crew” together! And maybe we’ll have a new crew member this year?!  ;)

I’ll probably be the one that earns the cash................al ready went in 2” over my ice-fishing boots on a hike-in excursion this winter! Found out they are waterproof............ .from the inside too!  :o. Made the rest of the hike not so pleasant!  ::)

LOL!  ;D

Hey Jake, maybe we can coax somebody we know into showing us how to make our own fly rods?!  ;) ;D

Building a fly rod is so easy....even a caveman can do it, and maybe even you Rutt.   It's all about the spline, or spine, depending on who you are talking to.

Neither exist according to others too!  Most pro builders just tell me  "build on the straightest axis".   I haven't built a fly rod, but many open water and ice rods for myself.  Agreed, it is very easy once you get over the fear that you will ruin the blank.

I agree.   Everyone has a position on just about every subject.  To some degree, it may not matter.  But, the thing with a fly rod is they are very light and sensitive and if you don't get the spline/spine right, it will turn in your hand as you are false casting.  You also lose power if you don't have that backbone propelling the line.  The longer they are, the more critical it becomes.

Gotcha I can understand that principle. They make tools to find it and I always try to assume it matters too. I just found it ironic that some well known folks didn’t subscribe. I have so far resisted the fly fishing addiction as I have too much stuff already lol. I certainly appreciate the simplicity and art of it though. Hope you folks have a trip. Sounds like you will!

Be careful with fly fishing.  It can be an addiction worse than any drug.  You start dreaming about rising fish.  You think about perfect drifts.  You envision most likely holding spots trout will lie in waiting for food, and hopefully your fly, to drift over them.  And this all happens when you are at work, sitting at dinner with your wife, or doing something you should be paying attention to but can't stop wishing you were standing in a stream reading the water.

Definitely helps pass the time and might even get you ready for when you are on the water! I often think back to the fish I was catching and what presentation, drift, what the flow and clarity was like, just to prepare for the upcoming wet water season.

Can't believe after getting that wet boot RN you continued around the Lake for another hour and then had the 2 hour hike back! You make me want to pack an extra pair of socks for scenarios like that haha.

I'd be torn on what type of rod I would want to build first, I think id start with something I'd use the most so probably a Light 5.5 - 7' for use on trout, bass, panfryers, ect. I have several fly rods that I haven't even put a maiden voyage on yet, wouldn't want to add another looker to the collection, still need to put some more hours on the ones I've got in circulation.

Back in the early years, I would keep a journal of every trip to the Delaware.   Water level, temperature, weather conditions, and of course, bug activity, etc.  Wrote down details of every fish I tried for (note I didn't say catch).  Fly fishing is a lot like hunting.  You sneak into position to cast to a rising fish without scaring them.  Sometimes you only get one shot at them and either they take, or you put them down.  Other times, you can cast to the same fish for an hour wondering why he is eating everything else but your fly.  That's the fun (and sometimes frustration) of it.  Anyway, I have gotten away from it since my long-time partner is no longer available.  My camper sits right on the river bank and never gets visited other than to open/clean it out in the Spring and close it up in the Fall.  I fished last Spring for a few hours when I opened it up and caugth two really nice browns.  Maybe this year will be the return.  Let's hope.  Time is no longer on the positive side....

I was just about to say this! Definitely get into it it’s not very challenging intricate it could be yes but it is relatively simple as carp mentioned spine and spline! Most important all rods bend in one direction generally find that spine and that’s where guides run ice rods are incredibly simple you can even wrap them on a cardboard box cut out with v notches and use any kinds of rotisserie motor to apply and dry epoxy for me I couldn’t find a ice rod lay out with guides I likes spaced out and large enough for the reels I use so 7-8 years ago started building and I can’t look back now it’s really something fishing technique specific rods like you mentions 11 foot euro rod! Deadly niche rod that would cost 300-1000$ to build with some man hours put into it and your fully build for 150 maybe cheaper!

Definitely matter some rods have 2-3 spines go with the most present one should pop into “place” faster with more spring to it usually carbon fiber blanks vary more then glass graphite or composite think of it as a human bending over we only bend one way heavier bottom fishing rods are built spiral wrapped these days to prevent that reel from wanting to spin back on you when building a casting or conventional rod the guides are on top of the spine and the rod naturally wants to spin back to spine like a spinning rod where the guides run the spine this is just as carp mentioned above
