I appreciate the offer, but there's no need to risk giving away such a good spot by taking someone else in, I will be satisfied with a picture of one on a digital scale, and up against a tape measure.
No disrespect intended, but bear in mind that the Indiana State Record BG "only" weighed 3.25 lbs, and was 13.5" long. And this upcoming March 25th, that record has stood for exactly 40 years.
-
For comparison, here are a couple photos from last year. I raise bluegills, and this is a hybrid from one of my ponds. 9.75" and 1lb 2ozs.

-
and if u r bass fisher just take a walk arnd the pit and see the biggest bass ive seen but dnt plan on caughtn thm unless u got a trick or two ive tryd everythng i can thnk of and cant get thm mnsters to bit
-
A new world record REDEAR was caught last summer, it weighed over 5.5lbs, and was "only" 16.75" long,
and they grow larger than Bluegill.............
I would love to see a 16" Bluegill, or a 3.5lb Bluegill. But I would need to see them on a scale, with a tape alongside.......... most fish of this reputed magnitude never live up to the angler's claims once an accurate measuring device is produced. Don't misunderstand, I would love to be proven wrong, with "proven" being the key point here. I have seen verified photos of Bluegills over 3 lbs before, so I'm ready and willing to take a look. However, outrageous claims demand infallible proof... Unfortunately, stories from an undoubtedly, and justifiably, excited angler do not count.
-
ive been fishin my whole life and ive fished ths pit over and over and everytime the samethng happns i leave wth buckets and coolers of thys mnsters so if u thnk its a lie bring ur camra and scale and u can take pic and wght thm y im caughtn thm lol i fish my buddys pound and its got Georgia giants in it and it nothng like the pit
-
I can't wait for your photos, good luck. ;)
-
i have a 10 inch hand and theres only 2 ways i can hold the fish thumbin thm by the mouth or holdn thm like a taco lol im cant get my hands belly to back so whos ready i am
-
That sounds like a good time to me. Id love to go.
-
X2 I am game
-
Wish I could go. However, I can't afford it...I would be inclined to mount any bluegill over 12". :)
-
Shoot take me I'll be happy with a bunch of 12"ers. ???
-
As would I.Im sure large bluegill are present in most lakes and rivers. I too have hybrids in my pond and the best they have grown to is 9 in and one pound. Red ears grow larger and there have been some very nice three-quarter and one pounder taken from pine lake and most are in the ten and eleven in. size. I wont discount a mans word, but I too need to see,lol That said Ill come too!..... :P
-
Are you sure my wife didn't give you the tape measure you are using ;D ;D
-
;) ;) I can't believe all the scepticism about a 16" bluegill ::), but a 180' deep gravel pit? :-\ I don't know about that. ;D ;D ;D Just seems like an awful long ways to bring up rocks. ;) I'm just sayin'.
-
well lets make plans anytime is good for me im layoff so lets go
-

i would like to go and try andsee some of these big gills.........
-
A 16" Bluegill? 3.5lbs?
I'm gonna' need to see a pic on the scale, or against a rule.......... And I would love to see either one, so please post away. :)
Me too, would like to see the picks with tape and scale.
-
ive been told tht this pit ive been fishn is a 180 feet deep the gills look like packcoos big humps on the heads and frm finger tip to almst my elbow long
UMMMM....I am with sprkplug on this one....I need to see some pics....I am not a big person and my finger tip to elbow is roughly 17.5 inches. No possible way you are catching true BLUEGILLS anywhere close to that size. Since you offered, I will take one for the team and be happy to meet you there anytime. Just PM me when and where to meet you. I will bring the bait, the camera and the tape measure. You name the time and place. I can be in South Bend in 30 minutes or less. Also, I assume you have permission to fish there as I am not going to trespass.
-
maybe they arent gills but warmouths they get to over 2 lbs here they look like a gill on roids i.d. fish that are not uasual is difficult i saw a tench couldnt begin to tell you
GOD BLESS
mo

Let me see if I've got this straight, we have a 10" hand. 180' deep gravel pit. 16" bluegill that are 3.5 lbs. each. Now even a girlfriend. Is there any overhand bowling also? I'm out for the year, great story to end the season with. Maybe we can have good ice next year.
-
If there was ever a time I hoped to be proven wrong, this would be it. I would like to think that I'm fairly knowledgeable about Bluegill, but I am certainly willing to admit that I have been mistaken before. However, I'm having a hard time making the math work in this case. If the Indiana record was 13.5" @ 3lbs 4ozs, and the world record was 15" @ 4lbs 12ozs, then a 16" Gill has to be pushing 5lbs, maybe a little more. A new world record, and multiple versions of it from the sound of things.
In addition, if the angler's hand is 10", and the 16" fish reached from fingertips to near elbow, then the forearm length would be only 6". That doesn't quite add up, either.
I believe in giving everyone the benefit of a doubt, so that eliminates one possibility and leaves me with 3 scenarios.
A) There is a lake full of world record sunfish in Northern Indiana.
B) The fish in question has been misidentified.
C) The size of the fish has been greatly misrepresented.
I am greatly anticipating pics and measurements of these fish, but I'm not ready to hold my breath.
-

Theres a pretty deep hole in fort wayne...Hanson Gravel on Sandpoint. They have an observation tower to look down into it; its gotta be well over 300'.
-
How big a hole do you have to pull those Gills thru??? They have to be 7-8" tall.
-
dang!
-

Waited all weekend to get a reply. What happened to the open invite ??? Guess if i can't go catch 16" gills i will have to settle for 24" crappie ;D LOL
-
Not at all suprising this guy BAILED!!!! I am not even sure the motivation here? Why come on and chirp about cannon gills, invite people, etc and be full of it?
-
Don't think there was any motivation other than having to be the guy that catchs the biggest. One of those mine is bigger than yours type of guys.
-
If you looked at his gramar, spelling and his command of the engilsh language ( and I am not sure if it was english) I am surprised that he got any responses on any of his posts. Although it was certainly entertaining.
-
Well the guy can barely type....let alone operate a measuring tape
-

Is that all you got? I regularly catch 36" crappie and got one on the wall that's 42". But I don't have a camera to show ya.
-
Would like to know where these gravel pits are. I know they get some BIG fish around the Linton pits near Terre Haute. Never fished there but know guys who tear them up at the right times. Only have electric motors and arent heavily fished. The harder ones to get to have the best fishing. Sure would like to have a 16 inch gill next to my 26 inch crappie. LMMFAO.
-
I think he's probably looking for some attention. Maybe looking to see what kind of response he will get from all of us who are in touch with reality LOL. ???
-

I think maybe that was the point....entertainment . Get our minds off the short ice season we had
-
Ya think he throwing the bait out there to see how many bites he would get??

By the way, that fish is not one of mine. In fact, it's not even from this state. That fish came from Richmond Mill lake, in North Carolina. It was caught by Dr. Bruce Condello, Bluegill enthusiast extraordinaire.

Here's what a 3lb Bluegill looks like. Around 14"
[/ I am wondering why certain gills are so different appearance wise. Must be different cross breeding or water clarity. I myself like the colorful males. What do all you think are the reasons. That is a beautiful gill size wise but kinda ugly. I would still be proud to put it on my den wall.
-
The water clarity the fish came from certainly has a lot to do with it, as does the time of year. Case in point-this fish is wearing his spawning colors, which tend to be darker in males. Bluegill will often darken up after being caught, and while being handled due to stress. And lastly, this is a Coppernose Bluegill, a strain found in southern waters, and colored differently than our native, northern strain.
-
Sparkplug, you have it going on. Seems like you are definitely a informed breeder. Do you happen to have a pic of these Georgia giants that get over 3 to 5 pounds. From what I have read these are the biggest of the gills. Was wondering if they have the orange bellies and blue typical colors that the gills have around these parts? Thanks for all the info.
-
abishop, I will have to dig through my photos to find them. I will touch on one very important point first though. Georgia Giants are Hybrid Bluegill, a cross of at least two different fish, the exact combination is considered proprietary information by the supplier, Ken Holyoke. The common Hybrid Bluegill is the result of a union between a female green sunfish, and a male bluegill. In my research I have found no instances that can be substantiated where Georgia giants achieved sizes that were larger than "ordinary" hybrid bluegill. There is however, much hype and misinformation out there, a lot of it stemming from one photo of a huge fish claimed to be one of Holyoke's giants. "Bubba" as it has come to be called.
Many people purchase hybrid bluegills based on advice from a friend, or a glowing recommendation from a fish supplier, without ever learning the hybrid's shortcomings and advantages. I could type for hours, but in a nutshell, a hybrid bluegill will not grow larger than a regular bluegill, all aspects being equal. A hybrid fish will not exceed the maximum size of it's parent species.... they grow faster for the first couple of years, then their growth slows and the regular bluegills can overtake them in size, if everything is equal. I have raised hybrid bluegills in one of my ponds for years, I'm still waiting to see one over 2lbs. The pic I posted of the bluegill on the scale weighing 3lbs tells the whole story.
Regular Bluegills have the capacity to outgrow hybrids if ultimate size is the goal.
-
Is it ture that the hybrid does not reproduce?
-
Completely false. Another internet myth. Hybrid Bluegills can and do, reproduce. The benefit of hybrid bluegills in that regard is that the first generation hybrids, referred to as F1's, are predominantly male. Around 90-95% male in fact. The lack of female partners limits their reproduction, as long as no other sunfish species are present.
That's why hybrid bluegills are recommended to be stocked without regular Bluegills, fewer females means little to no offspring, which in turn means they will not overpopulate and stunt.

Thats not a bluegill...thats a flounder. :woot:
-
I happen to be close to north liberty as well, Would love to go with.
-
What happened? Nobody make it out to the pits?
-
They did... but when the giant gill got hooked, he fought back and swam so hard the unlucky fisherman was pulled into the bellows of the pit and never heard from again. :'(
-
LMMFAO.
-
He actually did pm me back about going last saturday but ive been pretty sick so i turned it down, plus it was super windy and cold
-
It was a good thing you didn't go... that could've been you.

lol headed there in the morning so be ready for sum pics
I'm ready !!

I'd recommend taking today's paper to put the fish on when you take the photos. Might be hard to convince some of the guys here otherwise.
-
i sure will do that i got the tape and scale ready to going to get the ol cardinal ready now
-
I eagerly await your proof. Good luck out there
-
Norm, I am ready just call. I have a flat of crawlers just waiting to feed those hungry gills. Al

Nrthrn, You are one of the best "sports" on this forum! abishop, I truly hope they don't take you too :-\. Leave your worms at home... these Goliath's eat human. Tie your finger on... guaranteed to catch 3 on the same hook!
-
This just might be one of the best threads I have ever read on this board. I check it daily in anticipation!
-
I know where he is talking about and was told the same how big they are.So its the truth.
-
I know where he is talking about and was told the same how big they are.So its the truth.
I know where too and have heard the same from other people including my grandfather who used to fish out there 30+ years ago. I just never had a way on.
-
I went out to that gravel pit this afternoon. I went to go get several of those 5# blue gills. On my way I tripped on a morel. Since I knew I could catch big blue gills there anytime, I chose to pick mushrooms. I only brought home 4 because they were a little smaller than usual and I knew it would be better tomorrow. The mushrooms are always big at this particular gravel pit. When I got home i weighed the 4 mushrooms and as I suspected they were a little below average, they only weighed 30lbs. 9 ozs. The average weight would be 8 lbs. a piece. I would show you the pictures but unfortunatley when I tripped on that first morel I fell and, wouldn't you know it, I broke my camera. You will just have to take my word for it.
-
i sure will do that i got the tape and scale ready to going to get the ol cardinal ready now
I am awaiting the next excuse. Although it would be funny if dude posted a picture with a ton of cannon gills that mad our mouths drop.
-
You just have to be ready for anything. Remember my son, patience is a virtue grasshopper.
-
A cooler full of world record Bluegills. Shoot, a cooler full of State record Bluegills.
I say again.... on the digital scale, next to the tape. Just like the photos I posted.
The fish must break 3lbs 4ozs to claim state. 13.5" long.
-
Hmmmm.....they must not have been biting when they went the other day. :roflmao:
-
I'll bet that solar storm has got them in a negative pattern. :-\ ;)
-
Is this the thread about the two 28" bass??? What did I miss.
Oh Crap I always come in late
Paul
-
No, but we all catch 28" bass on this thread. This ones about 16 inch gills, a lot of suspense and no evidence
-
He seems like a nice guy...
-
He is my # 1 new bestest buddy. He is taking me to the famous HONEY HOLE. Just have to wait my turn.
-
What # are you in line??? I'm tellin you, if I lived near the pits and was offered a seat in the truck, but became a number, I'd do something to jump the line. Hell, you might have to give him a back rub, but at least you'll get to go! ???
-
What ever it takes. I will be the next new world record bluegill holder.
-
The sad part is, this thread was the most entertaining thing that happened to me this past season. My ice never got over 1.5" thick. I fished open water most of the winter.
Never caught any 16" Bluegills, though. ;)
-
I'm starting to lose interest...lol. If the pics of the hog bluegills get posted someone wake me up or send me a PM. :)
-
Northrn, where are you? The Pits? Are you ok? Did they get you to? We are getting concerned!
-
I'm starting to lose interest...lol. If the pics of the hog bluegills get posted someone wake me up or send me a PM. :)
Hard to post pics of fish that don't exist......16" gills by the cooler full, you would think somewhere, someone he has taken would have a picture or two of these monster gills, since they are world record quality fish. ::)
-
I'll post one of mine from today, hopefully to get things started......... 10", and 1lb 1oz.
-
Swaaaeeett!!!
-
That is one fat fish. Is it a hybrid?
-
Yes it is.
-
Sparkplg, Got these from a pond that a buddy has permission to fish. These fish were caught on Jiggin raps. They are very healthy and THICK. I would love to have this strain of gill in my pond. Can you tell anything about the gills from the pics? The knife in the picture is a Cutco 11 1/4" long.
Here's one that came from one of our lakes in K-county:

Those are some great looking gills'. Indiana is too far north to have any of the southern strains, or coppernose Bluegills, so chances are those are northern, or native fish. There are a couple folks selectively breeding Northern strain Bluegills for optimum size, but they are scarce, and not readily available to the general public.
I would say that those fish came from a BOW where the food supply is plentiful, and whatever harvest strategies are practiced there regarding Bluegills, and just as important, Bass, are working together to produce these excellent fish. That's not to say that genetics doesn't play a role in creating a big Bluegill, because it can. But in my opinion, having an adequate food supply is more important than a good pedigree. Are those fish fed supplemental, or artificial feed? If not, the BOW that they came from is a pretty special place.
Your bottom photo looks to be a cross between a Redear and a Bluegill. A naturally occurring hybrid. Nice fish also!
-
With this warm weather we should be hearing something on the record bull gills.
-
I, along with the others who are watching this thread, can not wait for a report. I might even walk from upstate NY to fish with yous guys!
abishop, I'll bring downriggers with bear traps on them if you bring planer boards and a crate of 2ft. worms.
-

To my knowledge there is no special harvest strategies in place and I'm not sure how much fishing pressure it gets. They may do some supplemental feeding. All species of fish in the pond seem very healthy. It is a true joy to fish this pond because of the huge bluegills!
-
Beautiful Gills,my favorite fish. On a down note a caught two 16-17 inches yesterday but a 75 lb snapping turtle came out of the mud and ate stringer and all before I could get a picture. lol I'm 59 and ice, open water fished all my life and still looking for and 11 inch fish,I caught several 10-10 1/4 inches through the years but here in Pa. they take a long time and far and few get to10 inches.
-
I'm starting to wonder if this thread is one of those "How do you keep an idiot in suspense" jokes..... If it is, it is working for me anyway.
I'm curios where this ranks as far as views/comment quantity for Indiana board posts. 7 pages of comments and over 3000 views seems pretty high for a little Indiana board.

Any one else hear the dueling banjo's???
-
the crappie in my avatar is 17.5 inches and weighed 2.5 pds...the in state record is 4 pds i think....now thats a crappie
-
nrthrn in fishr.-that was a good one, maybe start one about the 30'' smallies your catching, they will probably believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
i can only speculate.... but i would have to assume that due to the harsh winter and thick ice the pits have experienced some serious winter kill due to the disolved oxygen levels getteing to low...
largest of the species are usually killed first...place is probly just left with a ton of stunted 9" inchers!!
and after this much build up i would hate to laugh at a 12" gill if even one of those were to posted.....
so we wait!!
-
WOW!! Just stumbled onto this thread. What a blast. Read the whole thing. Very entertaining. Waiting for pictures and in line number ;D
-
12 inch gills...mother natures cure for erectile dysfunction....
-
i can if i can figure out how to do it
-
I want pics, and a PHONE CALL.
-
I'm tired of waiting too...

I've had gills suck down crawlers hooked once and hanging straight down about a foot below the hook all you here is a pop and it is inhaled
This is what a mainly use to catch gills, just a crawler threaded on the hook past the collar, nothing else. A 6 inch bluegill can suck the whole crawler in and get hooked deep. Happens a lot.
This isn't huge but this size is common by my house.

My neighbor has pictures of a couple 12 inch gills he caught a couple years before I moved here. I will see if he will let me scan them so I can post, but it may be a while as he is retired and gone a lot.

Wow, can't believe this thread has almost 6000 views.....
It was too cold back in February, I suppose it's too warm now? ;)
-
lol....I almost forgot about this thread....never got involved in the conversation, but it sure was entertaining.
-
promises, promises... it was great while it lasted! Kept us all interested...
-
wow now that so funny stuff.....
-
I thought I would resurrect an oldie but a goodie from the past. ;D I loved every post on this thread!!! ;)
-
I want to fish it thru the ice.
-
If your going to ice fish the pits better take a saw to cut a large enough hole to get them gills threw.LOL
-
Hhahahahahahahah awesome
-
O BOY here we go.LOL
;) ::)
-
You know we really need some ice if we are back to this .HAHA
-
You know, I pm'd this guy back when he first posted this and thought that I might get to go, but I never got a response. I do know what pit he is talking about though, and I'm not really sure that he had the "permission" that he said he had. Those pits are owned by Walsh and Kelly, and Reith Riley and I think may still be in operation. As far as the enormous size that was bragged about, well I will leave that to your imagination. ;)
-
I had been steelhead fishing last year for about a month once this thread was started so I never read it until just now. Haven't fished last ice ever because I usually begin steelhead fishing around mid Feb. I can't believe what I miss out on by not checking in after mid Feb. I just read all 9 pages though. If that place freezes he will surely be eating well this winter.
-
I'm thinking there should be ice on the gravel pits by now ??? ;D ::)
-
NOW, THAT IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT. STILL WAITING FOR THE CALL.
-
The thread that just keeps on giving. It really is a good read.
-
Unfortunately its not laying on a tape measure and looks like its already mounted ::)

I think it is just frozen! Looks like he is holding by the gill flap on the backside. It is a bigun for sure, but would like to see it on a tape like you said.
-

Yeah dont think my 12 " Bull gill was mounted lol my ice fishing partner and i made a trip to Nebraska where the gill and pike fishing is awesome
The pics were taken on an older camera phone so theyre not the greatest quality but my buddys gill was 10 1/2" and the best pike was 38 " since we got the fish verified as all three of these are Nebraska Master Angler award fish I will post a picture of the award certs after we recieve them !!! This one a phenomial trip but I couldnt even dream of a 16" Bluegill. My partner shown with the 10 1/2" gill just broke the WY state record crappie and it was only 15 3/8" long lol http://county10.com/2013/01/13/record-black-crappie-caught-at-boysen-reservoir/
A 16" Would be one heck of a trophy and one would most likely have some picsUnfortunately its not laying on a tape measure and looks like its already mounted ::)
Lol at this where is your big gill pics?
-
Found this interesting also
Turns out T. Hudsons World record Gill that is 4 lbs 12 oz
is only 15"s long LOL

I fish a couple of private lakes and on Camelot I catch some really good size gills I'm hoping to get a few to put on the wall.

This is the 2nd time I have had the pleasure to read through this thread (and it keeps growing all the time). It is my new tradition before Ice Season. This is as good as our family tradition of watching Lampoons Christmas Vacation every year. It is worthy of its own t-shirt for iceshanty folk. Good Luck All!

Got out to the old pits the other day, I filled a cooler wth the biggest gills u will ever see, and so many bass I was sick of them by the time i left. The flx28 just showed a red circle, didn't need it anyway tho, couldn't get my jig to the bottom before it got inhaled. ;)
-
Went to the south bend pit and got myself a bucket full of 17 inchers.. yes 17 not 16.. I'm now a record holder! ;) ;D ::)

I remember him stating that he had to lip a gill through a 10" hole...how can you not believe a master fisherman like that. Just that one time battery was dead on his phone. What is the odds and of all times to have that happen @#$%

New to this thread but following intently!
Just one thing to add: COLD WEATHER SHRINKAGE. I WAS IN THE POOL! Same for State record fish maybe? State record but cold and some shrinkage? ;D

Been by that Gravel Pit a few times, if it had gill's that big, there would have been boats on it.
