Are my hooks too big?
« on: Jan 24, 2018, 02:12 PM »
Hey guys,

I've never had luck for togue - wondering if my hooks are too big?

I have been using 1/0 on 6-8" suckers, or #6 on my smelts. Really would like to land one this year.

I'm still trying to learn to match hook size to bait size but clearly not getting it yet haha.

I don’t use any bigger than 8’s.  12lb Fluoro leaders.
I’m feeling alright, I’m feeling ooooookay! - moe.

I've never used anything but #12 and #14 trebles.  I am curious about circle hooks, though...

Tight lines,

I don't think 1/0 is too big, personally.  I use mostly size 1 and 2 octopus hooks with shiners for lakers and have no problems with hookups.  A 1/0 is barely bigger than a 1.  Like you said, you need to match the hook to the bait.  If you're using big bait, you need a bigger hook or it will get hidden and miss fish.  We used to use 2/0 - 3/0 on big Swedish Pimples with no issues.  Lakers have big mouths!

I always think of matching the hook to the size of the bait more than anything else.  I’ll usually use a 4 or 6 for smaller smelts or shiners, but often use a 2/0 for a big sucker.
