O/T First Woodcock in Machiasport
« on: Mar 01, 2018, 04:42 PM »
The string of warm days has got some of the spring bird migrations underway. While out in the yard, I just heard the first woodcock "peint". I commonlly hear the first one in the first week of March, so this one is right on schedule.

You should be listening to your reel squawk in stead of listening to birds.
Got some nice slabs today, along with a pail of yellows, time to fire up the smoker. :)
You & Martha have to take a day off from work & let's go fishing.

Might be the earliest woodcock arrival .  This might mean Ice fishing will be over sooner than expected.  I am glad I spent the whole day out ther jigging ,Ended up with 5lbs of perch fillets.

They have long bills, but not long enough to penetrate the 3 ft. of snow on the ground up here ;D

The Cabela's Fishing catalog came in the mail yesterday though.  That counts as a sign of spring.

Right , Clamfarmer, we are right on the coast with lots of alders and the snow has disappeared, so that's a better condition for early woodcock than northern Maine.

With  the sun up over two hours and the side hills after this storm suspect Woodcock will be everywhere.

StolenB8  good sledding if you don't  go over some of the open holes which were getting pretty big

We had a lot of Red Wing blackbirds show up at feeders in the last couple of days.  This snow will raise up lakes all over and when that happens we get more open water around shoreline .  This can be very dangerous!!!!!!!!!
