Does anyone have a preference as to using sawdust from only certain types of trees? I thought I read somewhere that some people only used certain types.

Use regular ol' Cornmeal. Seems to help them last longer. Remember to change it frequently, and spikes need to be kept in 'fridge (warmer 40-45 area of 'fridge, like butter compartment on door) Waxies are OK left in a cool place.
-
Leave them what they are packed in . Keep in coldest part of fridge, they will keep till spring if they last that long. Also keep all AIR out of Ziploc bag as air KILLS. 33-38 degrees no warmer that's where I have the best luck.

Hank, I think as long as you avoid cedar and use wood that has never been processed you should be OK. sawdust from your basic pine lumber contains chemicals that will kill them off.

I use bedding for rodent cages. Bought a bag 2 years ago and have over half left.
-
Also toss in a little dry oatmeal. I heard fridge storage is too cold. Store in bsmt, dark shelf.

Spikes in fridge 34* is fine, waxies 50* windowsill mostly good

you want hardwood no pine.i also keep them in the fridge at 34 and they last ood.keep air to min

Dry oatmeal also works good.
