Pike/Pickerel hybrid.
« on: Feb 01, 2022, 06:59 AM »
Caught an interesting fish recently in CT waters. Confirmed by a reputable source the Northern Pike/Pickerel hybrid is a rare occurrence but they do exist in the wild with varying traits. This is the first one I’ve caught and immediately realized this fish was different. Notice the extreme forked tail & fin shapes. The green coloring and black vertical bar on the eye. Very cool looking fish.
Released for someone else to catch.

That's is cool. I have heard of them and supposedly the females grow to around 10lbs. Ct river supposedly has quite a few.

I've heard they are actually fairly common on Champ.  No personal experience, though.

Have caught them on Champ, one was relatively big for being a hybrid.  Not sure I can find the pic.

I’ve heard they are prevalent in Champlain also PikeKing & LowAccord. Good to know it’s more common in other body’s of water.

Very nice fish!  We regularly catch these on Lake Champlain at my buddies cottage around the Canadian line.  Most of the time they are between 4 and 7lbs.
