Oxbow next weekend?
« on: Mar 11, 2019, 03:54 PM »
Had s good day Saturday at least 17”s of ice. With this weeks warm weather the ice should be still be good but getting on to it could be an issue.

Thoughts??

Hell to the yeah!!

Only concern might be high water from snow melt up north. Levels are all over the place as it is.

Nothing a decent length plank can’t take care of.

That said, while right up the road, I haven’t been there once this year.. not sure what the deal is there.

A lot of people out there Saturday. Didn’t see air of people ruining for flags but was a great weather day. All pickerel and a 23” pike for me.

I was under the lines on Saturday and lost a okay pike at the hole. 3 flags for 12 hours of fishing.

Place was a zoo on Saturday, did ok, some pumpkins, bluegills and a couple of average sized bass on the jig stick and a small pike on the tip ups.  Went back yesterday and couldn't buy a strike.  Drilled 40+ holes and marked only 3 fish, none of which felt like cooperating.  Saw the same thing, consistant high teens for ice thickness, but agree with the above statement about the edges.  Time will tell.
TIP UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I'm done with the bow for the year. I have better consistent pike fishing within 30 min of my place then traveling an hour to a crowded oxbow. Only real reason why I kept trying there was for a bowfin or something unique like a channel cat or a walleye.

Edges are gonna be soft by the weekend. Already a little water on top right below the parking lot. Fished with pizzamaker and a few other guys today. 2 guys set up on the channel got 2 good pike. 9lber that I was walking by when he pulled it up. Little while later they got a bowfin and a bigger pike at the same time. My group ended with a small pike and I got my best for the season so far. Just under 38" 15lbs

Ice still solid today, fishing still off and on. Most of my action today was jigging and a couple flags on small shiners and worms, nothing on bigger pike bait.

Out there yesterday with 2 friends, 16+" edges no problems. Moved several times all over the place and talked to several guys out there. Slow isn't the word for it, dead is better. Not 1 flag in 8 hours for me and a couple small perch and 1 bass for my buddies ALL day. 3 others with the skunk there also yesterday. I have been there 4 times this year with total of 3 flags and no big pike or bass thus the name OXSLOW! Not enough days left to waste my time there this year. My friend did jig up 11 sun fish if that's what your into. That's what I do for my grand kids in the summer because they don't care what they catch.
A bad day of ice fishing is better than any day at work!

Good luck to you. With luck I won’t need waders to get on the ice. The boat will need to be uncovered if worse comes to worse. Lol

Fished the bow today with minimal success. One chew and spew for me, my buddy got one small one and 2 guys we met out there got one 9 lb pike that had a mouth full of mud, one of the weirdest things iv ever seen. Luckily it was colder then expected with minimal to no melting on the edges

Walked on and off today no issues. However its starting to get water on the edge and some spots are opening up, but it still felt pretty solid, just watch your step.

Fishing action was slow as to be expected, fished 8 hours, got like 4 flags all day. Missed something decent on a small perch I was using for bait. The rest of my day was jigging a couple nice crappies in 12 FOW and some nice yellow perch.

I cussed some other fishermen out, they got super close to me and had 2 DOGS. One of the dogs took a leak on my fishing gear and this pushed me over the edge, packed up and cuss them out as I moved away from the dogs. IMO dog do not belong on the ice, if you want to bring the mutt in your boat fine, but I am sure the town I was in has a leash law...

Sorry to hear about the dog. They should be kept under control.

How thick was the ice,  if you don't mind me asking?

Phishing.hacker i ran into you yesterday out there. We were both jigging next to eachother for a few minutes in the bowl. I thought you looked a little aggravated lol nice job getting on some fish. Still over 10 inches of ice as previously reported but edges are opening up. I ended up with one small pike
