I have never fished for smelt sorry I can't help. But you can use the search feature of this site just below the site sponsors. You should find some good info.
-
So did you try to search the site?
-
i think i did but nothing came up for smelt. it said all other kinds of fish but that.
-
i clicked on were it says icefishing fishing and hunting. was that were it is?

Try just searching smelt in the michigan part of the forum. 73 pages worth of results.
Summary...Lightest line possible (1 or 2lb.)with 2 or more very small hooks and a hali at the bottom. Just get in a group of guys with underwater lights and tip each hook with a chunk of waxworm or spike. A flexible pole is a must.

Its a blast! I would recommend using 2 pound test, maybe put some small hooks up higher than your jig..i would use a Hali jig and put waxies on all the hooks..wait til they come into the shallows though

i use a hali and i use small black flies with a red tip on the tail above the hali no bait on flies if you run out of wax worms or spikes take a smelt and cut it into little chunks and put it on the hook it works really well
