Title: Anyone ever use cut bait for ice fishing pike?
Post by: WalleyeAdventurer on Nov 25, 2015, 12:00 PM
I have a handful of 4 lb freshwater drum sitting in my freezer and am planning on cutting up 1-1.5 inch squares of the flesh and salting them.  I'll give them a shot this winter and see if their pungent odor can attract some strikes.  Has anyone every done something like this before?  Maybe with suckers or other bottom feeders?

You should put your location in your profile.  Don't try this cut bait thing in New York!  We have to use certified disease free bait only.  Frozen smelt, shrimp, etc are not considered virus free..  Just sayin'

legend hmmmmn never thought about that.  I'll have to give it a shot.  Thanks frigidaire for the heads up.  As far as I'm aware it's legal in Michigan, although I could be wrong.

I use chunks of cisco on my jigs and full baits on my dead lines.
Can't say I have tried chunks like that though.
I'm sure strips would be awesome though.

I am far from a Pike expert, but I think you will do best with them late in the season when there is the most dead fish under the ice...

Thanks guys for the input.  If this works anytime this season, I'll bump up the thread with pictures.

Me too!

Hang half a dog just off the bottom.

Some days they outfish everything, including plastics.

I have also uses chunks of cut tullibee / ciscos on set rods.
Hot dogs have worked for me as well as older fatty bacon. :)

Give the freshwater drum a try, you never know what they will go for. ;)

Thanks Adkrs I didn't know how effective it was.  I'm still waiting to test it out but the temperatures have been in the high 30s lately, so hopefully within a few weeks I'll give it a go.

Agree on the hot dogs.  They work!  Never tried cut bait otherwise!

I hear ya.  Not a bad tasting fish but after a couple fillets you start to get tired of it.  The nice thing is the bones come out easily since they are so huge

Well with the season ending for me I didn't end up catching any pike on the drum chunks.  They did seem to work well for chumming in perch and the occasional walleye though...

I use cut bait for pike all the time. I us PK flutter jigs with oversized hooks and a strip of bait the size of the jig.

I accidentally brought salted sucker fillets instead of my smelt I had in the freezer, having no choice but to use the small fillets I was pleasantly surprised with a nice 32" northern. Plus it was caught by my 5 year old daughters! I don't think they'll be my first choice but it did work.
