Shappel Rover 1.0
« on: Jan 27, 2010, 03:41 PM »
I got a nice demonstation today at Fish307 lake Georges today, I fish alone 80% of the time, that 1.0 open floor is real nice and light ( i drag by hand) the 1.5 is much heavier albeit a bit larger. the sled can accomodate my gear also, any users out there? I am impressed by the material and simplicity.

I really like mine, 3rd time out with it yesterday afternoon. Easy to load and unload yourself, easy to just flip and move from hole to hole. I took a short cut to my truck at dark last nite and had to go up hill for a bit, was sure glad I got rid of my 2 man flip over. Its alot easier to pull 40# than 80 or 90#. I use the Rover 1.0 when by myself and my popup when I fish with someone.

Why do they want $30 more for the rover than a Recon DLX or the Clam Kenai? Is it worth it? I owned a shappell
3000DLX and loved it but my kids no longer go with me so I got rid of it. Now I want a one man flipover.

I was going to go with the Kenai, but after looking at it I really did not want the xtra length of the sled. For me the Rover 1.0 has the length and weight for me.I don't like wrestling to much out of the truck. Did'nt get a chance to look at the Recon. I used the Rover again today and did'nt even use the heater, the sun beating down on the dark top kept it toasty, and it only got up to 7 degrees today. Don't know why the xtra 30 bucks. It is built really good and tight, no slop.

Just looked at Frabill Recon which has the folding chair but i did like which I can buy for 173.50 including tax.
I also looked at a Shappell Rover 1.0 which also was nice and if I had to squeeze a small KID IN i COULD. The only
thing that scares me about the Rover is how it is attached to the sled 1 bolt on each side holding the support tube. The Rover had more room plus the door unzipped where the Recon didn't. Anyone can give me some insight
I would sure appreciate it thanks.

There is 2 bolts on each side by the bench and 1 on each side on the other end, then all the other bolts on the flipover pole support. Mine is solid as a tank. Did you look at a floor display that was'nt complete? I know when I was looking, some display models were kinda flimsey.

I have 2 rover 1.0s, the other one is for the wife or my grandson. I would like more room because I am a big guy, but I am gettin older and don't want it any heavier. It holds all my gear nicely and you cant get much more portable. Any of them suck when there is a lot of snow, I am looking for a set of cross country skis to put under sled to help it pull better in the snow. I also spray the bottom with a slicone spray to help it glide better in the snow. This helps a lot. You might also want to tie a bout a 5 ft longer piece of rope to the original rope (looped like original) makes it easier also. I have had mine for 3 yrs now...oh I bent the metal arms that lock the cover up, ordered a set from shapell over the internet, costs like $1.75 ea. and they where here the next day. That is fast....

That's the first upgrade I'm going to do is the seat and the shelf. this is my only complaint that outdoor carpet makes it look like it was built in the late 70's or early 80's. If they were going to use this carpet it should have been all black. I am very lucky to have a friend whose father does upholstery work and is very skilled at it. I hope to have posts with pics soon. The other upgrade would be the shelf in the
back. I would like to add some bins or compartments for stuff. Anyone else have upgrades they have done for their Rover 1.0/ Let's see
them!

Congrats on the rover 1.0. I really like mine. The only thing I have had time to do with mine is throw a padded cushion down on the seat, gets a little hard after awhile.

One question how do you anchor it to the ice if you get up to chase a flag what happens to the shelter?. Is there room for a heater and flasher gear.

Now I know why they sell covers for the sleds. I was driving today down the road with the shanty in the back
of my truck when I looked back it was blowing all over the place! That will be my next purchase for sure.

The covers for the Shappell sled are about the most reasonible. Frabill and Clam want a bunch for their covers. They should come with them.
I think the only one I saw that came with a cover was a HT shelter. Reeds Outdoors advertised a Rover 1.5 with a free cover.

When I purchased my 2.0 a few years ago at Cabelas it came with a free travel cover. I am yet to use it because when it is in my truck it just tucks nicely under my tonneu cover on the bed.

said they would not get anymore covers until next fall. :'( Looks like it's E-Bay! ;D

I have had the 1.0 for 2 years now.  I love it.  It is quick and easy to set up.  I attached a boat seat to the bench which has made it more comfortable.  I had a hip replacement last April so I was worried about getting back out on the ice this winter.  This shank is light and easy to pull for me.  There is room for my vex and heater also.  It would have been nice for them to include a cover for it like my 2.0.
