Hogback Smelt
« on: Jan 18, 2024, 09:03 PM »
I am reminiscing on past ice fishing and thinking about the smelt fishing on Hogback and Colebrook.  I bet it's been 20-30 years for me.  I am in the SE part of the state now and haven't headed that way in years.  I miss catching those 3-5 inch fish French fries!  We used to have a blast jigging them at night and filling up the buckets for a fish fry.  The smaller ones were put on the traps just under the ice to catch a big trout.  We caught some monster browns on smelt back then.  Does anyone still fish this way?

I am sure the ice isn't close to being safe on those waters yet.  I am still curious if anyone still fishes for smelt, or trout on smelt in CT though.
