Oh yes. There was Rotary Classic held for 9 years up till 2 years ago. That was at west lake in Prince George. The 5th annual Rotary was to be held in Kamloops but was cancelled last year due to no ice. :(

I go to a few ice fishing derby's every year. I even organize one in January every year for the Fraternal Order of Eagles. This year it is on Jan. 18 2004 at Mineral Lake, near Cranbrook, BC.

Hey Terry,
We don't ususally give away cash because we do these to raise money for charity or repair something at the aerie(club). But so far (my 7th annual this year) everyone has gone home with a prize or two. Prizes consist of anything from gift certificates to tackle and gear to housewares, etc. All prizes are donated by local merchants from Cranbrook ranging in worth from $5 - $100. Plus, lunch is included on the ice (hamburgers and hotdogs, etc) all this for $5. Everyone has a great time.

There is one on Moyie Lake on the first Saturday in February. It is always a good time and good food afterwards in the Pub. I am going to the derby on Pigeon as well with two buddy's, we have a cabn on the lake so it should be great fun. Maybe I will run into you.

I'm hard to miss cause I'm 6'4" and have one eye (actually I have two but one is artificial and I go as light as I can at a derby. So I remove it ;)) I'm usually the first 50 at least in the line-up. Last year we arrived at 2am to get the holes we wanted. The first ones in the line-up were there at 5pm the day before. Good luck.

I've been out of town for a bit - went to Vancouver Island for Christmas - it was the pits not having snow or ice.  JP, sounds like you've got some neat things happening around your area - bit too far away for me though.  I will be in Cranbrook around the end of May, but I don't think you will have ice then.

Terry,  I knew a guy that fits your description.  His name was Terry, he was from PG, had one eye, was tall and always good for a laugh.  I met him at the local college where he used to instruct mechanics - that you?   Too bad the West Lake thing is not happening any more.  It would be a stretch for me, but would make a good weekend.

So close Ice Gido but no I never did instruct mechanics. I did however go to College of New Caledonia in the late 80s. Yeah I'm always joking around, especially on ice. Once took one of my old eyes and did some quick surgery on a burbot I was keeping. I cut out its eye but had to make the socket bigger of course to fit my eye. When buddy had to go to cabin to warm up I pulled his line up and attatched the one BIG EYED burbot. He was rolling on the ice after he reeled it up. I should have taken a picture.
Yeah the West lake derby was fun. Never missed a year. Tight lines.

Good one.  Sounds like you should change your name to Dr.Terrygonefishing.

Will there be anything happening on West Lake this year?  What kind of fish are in West Lake?  When I was doing my Boy Scout thing at Camp Hughes, I only remember seeing Northern Pike Minnows (Squaw Fish).

p.s. Have you ever thought of changing your name to Terrygoneicefishing?  The acronynm would be TGIF. (ha, ha)

Good one. I like it. As far as I know nothing will be happening on West lake this year (according to the boys at Northern Troutfitters). I was fishing there last week and did catch some whitefish. Was watching them bite on the Aqua-vu. I went to Camp Hughes in the mid 70s. When did you go there? Man those were fun times. West lake also has burbot, northern pikeminnow, peamouth, rainbows, Dolly Varden, Mountain whitefish, and some other weird named bottom feeders (redside shiner, prickly sculpin, longnose & largescale sucker)) I refuse to eat anything out of that lake though. Just C&R. But the wife got me to bring home some peamouth to cook up for the cats last week. I actually work in the health care sector and occasionally do some scalpel duties. So this was old hat. Its is amazing what you can do with a scalpel and a few old eyes. You should see my pumpkins at halloween. :o

Well Terry you sound like my kinda buddy. I will be sure to look for the "one eyed monster" (pun not intended) when I am standing in-line the night before. I will be with two buddy's and we will probably be drinking and bullcrapting all night in the line up.
How cold do you think it will be up there?

Last year if memory serves me correct it was -19C with a slight breeze. The fellows beside us in the line asked if we minded them starting a fire (dumb question but he was being polite) The year prior it was 6C and windy but very nice.  I guess you never know. I will be there with my 2 buddies as well. Lots of guys take turns going back to the vehicle to rest and warm up. Good luck

So let's here some of those results from the tournaments!  Was in a derby last weekend on Windermere Lake.  Didn't have much to bring in to the weigh in ourselves, caught tons of pike minnow and whitefish though.  1st place for Trout:  4 lb. char, 1st place Squawfish(pike minnow):  3.8 lbs., 1st Place Bass:  1.8 lbs., 1st Place Lingcod: 3 lbs. (caught on piece of squid).  No monsters, unless you count the two goodlooking bass that looked like monsters when held by the little kid that brought them in, but it was a good day.

Horseshoe lake is near Cranbrook, about 25 minutes away. A pretty good drive from PG.
