Thirty years ago, I fished the Lake Champlain (broad lake)  before Christmas.
It never reached 32 the entire month with lows -25 mid month.

The wind will hurt the little bodies of water, but I bet the big lakes are dumping the heat with this wind. It should help them along as I don’t think they are close to freezing yet.

If I can fish a two trap lake (that isn’t in Pittsburg) on Jan 1, I will be a happy camper.

I think the wind doesn’t really help any body of water simply because of waves and disrupting the surface
Wait there's ice????

The wind helps to cool the water temperature down.  Once the water temperature reaches the point where it's capable of freezing (<39*), the wind inhibits the ice catching by keeping the water moving.  Because many smaller bodies have already cooled to the point where freezing is possible, wind is bad.  For the larger bodies of water, where the temperature remains higher, the wind helps shed the excess heat to bring the temperature nearer to the point it could catch.
Spell check -- give it a try.

Was windy this week but wet snow sat on top of all local ponds  and was frozen yesterday.    Watched two otters trying to keep the boat launch open at Streeter Pond but it was frozen this morning.   Forecast tells me that none of it will go away for the season     Will take a few nights before the white ice has some solid clear ice under it.

Completely agree! Although, looks like the wind held off and the smaller bodies of water around me got their first skim of ice on! I'm hoping to see a big drop in Winni temp tomorrow. BUT at least we're further along so far than last year, good start!

Keep in mind the lakes were warm to start this fall as swimming was possible in late Sept early Oct.

:tipup:Wind help cool big lake water and speed up turnover once surface temp is 39.  Winning water temp is now 5 degrees colder than same time 2017.
Small lakes and ponds that have already frozen over will make more ice faster with the help of moderate wind.
BUT!!  I remember a super windy January  day that turned 6inches of Great East ice into lots of ice bergs.

It’s a big lake, I would be pleasantly surprised if it’s already in the mid 30s. The deep water takes a long long time to cool off.

Temp at Weird buoy is now reported as 45 degrees. No suprise for the big lakes deep water.  39 degrees and turnover coming soon.  Water at upper Moltonborough bay is probably ready to freeze?
