10 lb walleye, No eggs...pics
« on: Feb 07, 2013, 12:00 PM »
just cleaned the 10lber my buddy caught yesterday and no eggs in it... very surprising. What would usually be egg sacks were white meaty, kinda fleshy looking sacks. And no its not a male, I know what milt sacks look like. Any ideas on this. Past its prime, sterile?? should I eat this fish??

If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 36 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in northern New York

it looks like there was a blood clot in there.   My guess is that its a female that either didn't spawn last year and for some reason didn't reabsorb the eggs, didn't spawn due to an injury, or due to age/mineral deficiency no longer has viable gonads, and just has a large fatty mass where the eggs would be produced.

Old fish that big do not reproduce that well some do some do not,Average size fish caught at the hatchery on Oneida are from16-24" under 5 lbs. the main size that reproduce very well. As far as eating that fish it looks fine, it will not be the best tasting walleye,Most fish under 5lbs are the best eaters. That being said Nice trophy fish in anyones book.

I agree smaller eyes taste better with out a doubt!! I didnt catch this fish or I would have mounted it for sure. Unfortunately the fish was hooked deep and bleeding badly and it was also about 5 degrees out with a stiff 15mph wind. I dont believe the fish would have made it. on the bright side i was kinda relieved to see no eggs in it when i cleaned it, at least it was a fish that obviously wasnt going to spawn..

That fat is in all my eyes, except late spring and early summer...  fat reserves...  probably too old, I get eyes all the time that are empty...

Ive heard that once females get around that size their spawning days are pretty much spent..

That said, goes to show you that the "releasing them so they spread their genes" belief can be shot down...

My uncle was a fisheries biologist for the DEC for 25+ years he always said the medium size fish do all the most productive spawning, pretty much across the board for most species..
