Stainless Steel Leaders
« on: Dec 31, 2018, 08:16 AM »
Does anyone use stainless steel leaders ice fishing?  I've seen a lot of people mention using fluorocarbon leaders but not much about stainless steel.

Since I'm new to ice fishing my buddy gave me all his old stuff he no longer uses and I found some 30# test stainless steel leaders...he said these would be good for pike.   My other buddy said he just runs his 6# line and has had no issues.

Should I be using a leader if fishing for walleye and pike?  Will they see the stainless steel leader or will I have any issues fishing with it in the ice?

I'm using Berkley Trilene 100% 6# Fluorocarbon Ice Fishing Line on my pole.

If my intention is to catch fish with teeth...steel all the way.

Heck if a panfish is willing to bite a hook on a steel chain...why would I shy away from a steel wire?

I don't use leaders for walleye and use titanium leaders exclusively for pike

I use wire leaders on tipups for pike. Wouldn't think you would get good action on a lot of baits for walleye with a steel leader. Pike wont care one bit.

i dont like steel leaders. maybe i would try them if the water wasnt so clear here. i like 10+ fluoro. they make a fluoro leader material that is even tougher. you can short piece it to your 6lb with a small swivel. that is what i would do. be sure to check line after catch.
