Title: Some Bayrunner Mods
Post by: 800stealth on Mar 08, 2014, 07:55 PM
I really like my Bayrunner but like any thing it can be improved... I though I'd share some of the things I've done to mine.
First I added a back rest to the sliding bench with a set of hinges from a folding boat seat, for the rest itself I used the electronics shelf... I figured it was already the right width and is finished in the same carpet as the seat. This left me open to make my own electronics shelf. I used pine boards and finished with some left over cherry stain I had. I have my HB 598 HD DI/SI mounted to it with a lower shelf that holds a 12 AH battery, a 110 inverter, and room for four 3700 size tackle boxes. Also a small raised carpeted floor section for my beagle Jezzabelle to get comfy on, it's just a 30"x16" piece of plywood with 3" legs and a thin pad and a bathroom carpet mat covering it. And lastly, not so much a mod but a tip... A bungee cord stretched across the two roof poles will work well as a rod holder and keeps them out of the way but irght in reach at the same time.

Nice job 800! I use the bungee cord idea for my summer rods in my garage but never thought of using it for my ice rods in my portable.

Thanks everyone, now if I could find the time to get it on the ice. Day light savings time should help, it's easier to get out after work with an extra hour of sunshine...

I love it. It' similar to using a flip but you have a floor. Once the fish move on all you gotta do is pull up the ducer close the hatches and move... no shutting off the heater, or putting stuff into the tub to move. I put a couple eyebolts in the front and back to tie it down but have never need to even on the windy days it stays put when I'm out tending traps. The only complaint I have is it's heavy... not so bad when heading out in the morning or bouncing around the lake but that last 5 minutes after the drag back to the truck and then having to lift it in to the truck or get it in the back of the SUV after your tired from being out all day is a pain... but well worth the effort. I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

800stealth  Looks like you have inspired some folks ...this looks to be a popular model for upgrade/mods this thread will be active for seasons to come.

Thanks guys, glad to share... I've got some plans for rod holders and a possible rattle wheel that I'll be working on over the next couple weeks... I'm also considering putting in a small monitor for use with the new Marcum wifi cam....  I'll keep this thread updated as the projects go.

Really like the seat.  I planned on building my own electronics shelf, but it never occurred to me to use the one that came with it as a seat back.  my bayrunner is still in the box - I will post some pics of my mods as I get them installed.

I sat in a Bayrunner today at Fleet Farm, I thought it was a nice shack. I like the idea you can move and not have to foiled it up.
Good luck for all the guys that bought one.

Finally finished up my rod holder last night. The base is a pine board with 4 conduit clips on the back so I can pop it in and out when folding up. I just ordered the clips from Shappell but I'm guessing something could be found at the hardware store. The "rocket launchers" are just under sink drain pipes but they polish up nice, are super light and a $4.50 a piece a good deal. At first I thought I would be able to put the holder anywhere... front wall, back wall, or over head but after some measuring found that the frame work is 44" wide at the roof line but only 42" at the sled base. So the clips must be positioned on a slight angle to accommodate this, now it will only fit on the front or rear at a specific height. Once I found it would have to be done this way I decided to angle the holders so the rod tips wouldn't block my view out the windows. I still have to cover the bolt heads on the back with something so the will not rub the fabric when its windy. At 5 pounds I think the bit of extra weight will be worth the convenience. I was also pleasantly surprised how much it stiffens up the structure.
The next project is installing some l.e.d. lighting, I'd like to get after the night time Crappie more this year and now I'm just using a ufo light hanging from the roof bar.

Sorry about the pic clarity... probably should have wiped off the lense, I was wondering why it wouldn't auto focus lol.

The bay runner is more of a 1 man shanty. You might be able to fit 1 average size adult plus 1 small kid.

The Bay Runner mods are pretty sweet  there 800. I got mine assembled now and I am definitely going to use some of your ideas. Now we need some ice. I think my first project is going to be a Smitty Sled because this sled doesn't look like it would be fun after a good snow.

Thanks.
Yeah they're pretty heavy after there's a few inches, I fish mostly small ponds that don't require much walking so I haven't gone the smitty route yet. When I do hit the big lakes I drag it with a Sportsman 800.

Did the carpet today. I just cut it to fit snug around the hatches and it stays put without glue or tape, same with the hatches themselves... the carpet is stiff enough that when pushed into place it's nice and tight. Bayrunners are tough to drain if they get water in them so I wanted to be able to just take it out any time, this way I can just lift it up or pull it out to dry the tub. This carpet is not outdoor carpet, it's just left over from when I did my Bedroom. I don't care if it only lasts a season or two, I still have enough to make 2 more sets. It takes a piece 56"x37.5" to cover the bottom front to back. This particular stuff was a bit over 3 pounds. I think it will help keep it warmer but it's mostly for my dog.

Icebucketjohn... Yeah, gonna go with the same led strips I use in my boat, they will go on the roof poles with adhesive tape and the wires fed down through the poles to hide/protect them.

Nice Mods 800. Working on a bayrunner myself and have the same boat seat brackets, would like to know how you mounted the aluminum brackets under the seat, did you first remove the plastic tube slide and then sandwich the aluminum bracket between the  2x2 blocks and tube slide, or remove the slide and wooden 2x2 block and sandwich bracket between seat and 2x2 block.  thanks

Thanks Chi, The hinges need to go as low as possible to allow enough room for it to fold without pulling the canvas to tight... Mine are in between the plastic sleeve and the 2x2. You likely need some spacers the same thickness as your hinges to level everything out, mine did. I can snap a couple pics when I get back home this evening.

Hopefully these pics are ok... I'm on my 6th or 14th glass of eggnog lol...
Just make sure the first time you go to fold it up after your done with the backrest that the seat is all the way forward and the doors are unzipped... Don't want to find out you don't have quite enough clearence and poke a hole in the canvas. Mine will only fold up with the seat all the way forward, if it's slid back the canvas is too tight. Good luck man, let me know if you have any other questions... glad to help.

Hi Stealth.

Hope you are having a great christmas holiday. I went and picked up a bayrunner this aft and have set it up. Before i went and drilled the fabric in, i thought i would get the opinion of someone that has already set one up. Should i be pulling the fabric really tight before cinching down, or is it better to leave a little slack?

Thanks kindly.

Hey Elrik, Merry Christmas.
I pulled mine as tight as I could and still have the zippers work smoothly. I tested by pulling it tight and pushing on the rubber cap and then trying the doors... I had to adjust both sides a little to get things tight but not to tight for the zippers. Mine is nice and quiet in the wind, not nearly as much tent flap as a couple of my friends flips.

Looking good Chi. I like that tray holding you heater... whats it from? Does the pup go ice fishing with you? Jezzabelle loves hitting the ice... as long as she can warm up in the Bayrunner every now and then.

Thanks 800 & HD, the tray was from a clam sled  I once had,   it's screwed down.      Here's the clam link   http://clamoutdoors.com/store/clam/accessories/console.html.    As for the paint, just left over from other projects. Make use of whats available. hope to get the pup out with me this year. I fish lake Erie eastern basin and conditions can be very rough, not an easy place to go out with the dog, but maybe I can get him out this year. Been sick with the flu for a week now and unable to fish so I've slowly been doing the lights (in between naps lol) and finished them today. I made a switch panel that covers the battery compartment, I decided to put each led strip on it's own switch to give better control of battery usage. There are two 12" strips on each roof bar and two 12" strips under the electronics shelf. I ran the wire inside the roof bars to protect them and keep the install clean. I'm very pleased with how bright it is inside with them all lit, and the placement gets rid of almost all the shadows. I left them all on for about three hours this evening and my 12 ah battery only dropped 1/10 of a volt. I'm guessing the entire setup adds about a pound to the weight. I also built a UV "dip cup" light for charging my glow jigs that swivels out of the shelf for use and then tucks back to a safe spot when not in use. Still need to cover the visible wiring with convoluted tubing and zip-tie up a couple loose ones but I'm happy with how it all came out. Night fishing is going to be much better now that I can see what I'm doing.

Thanks... I do have a DLX3000 as well. Did they stop making the suitcase shelters? My local sportsman shop still has 3000s and 4000s on the floor. They are great shelters too, just not to mobile when setup. Now that I have the BR my 3000 has turned into a storage and changing room for camping in the summer... keeps all the coolers and misc. gear in the shade and dry.

So it's getting to be that time of year again, and with the Bayrunner on its 3rd year of production now I'm guessing there's a lot more Runner owners out there now. I thought I'd warm this thread up again to see what some of you have done with yours, feel free to put up your mods and explain how you did them...
Next for me will be to put my runner on skis partly to help with pulling in the snow and partly to put the wear and tear on the skis instead of the tub, I'm thinking 3... one on each edge and one down the middle between the trap doors. I'm only looking to get an inch or two of lift from the skis, I think that's all that's needed to make pulling over snow easier without leaving a big gap between the ice and the trap doors for wind to blow through.  I thought about going the Smitty sled route but I'd really like to just mount the skies to the Runner directly so it's still just one piece of equipment... no unfolding or assembling the smitty then putting the runner on it and taking it off and what not... Just dump it out of the truck and be on my way.
So if anyone has tried this with their Runner or flip, let me know how it worked out. We're still 6-8 weeks away from ice in my neck of the woods but I like to have stuff ready ahead of time.

I've been following your posts on your mods for a few weeks now and I myself have done some of the same but what has really got me is the weight of it in the snow, like you I was thinking of a way to put skis on the tub, 3 skis is manditory I would think is that are under the tub while it's being fished from, I plan to fiddle around with mine next week to see if I can come up with a plan for lightweight frame that's sturdy enough to hold us and our gear, as far as wind blowing in you could always pile a few inches of snow around the base of the tub to block he wind, that also helps to anchor your runner on windy days
Title: Re: Some Bayrunner Mods
Post by: 800stealth on Oct 16, 2015, 01:54 PM
At first I was thinking a small frame but since weight is an issue with a runner I'm leaning more towards just ripping a few strips of 3/4" marine plywood to space the skis off the tub... that would give me about an 1 1/4"-1 1/2" of clearance from the tub to the ground. It doesn't sound like much but judging by the way my old smitty sled performed, I think the 3 skis will give enough flotation to hold the tub up out of the snow.
Title: Re: Some Bayrunner Mods
Post by: Elrik on Oct 16, 2015, 02:05 PM
I was taking mine out on a smitty in the snow last year a couple times. Was a real pita to get it on the smitty, so I can def see the appeal of just putting on skis. That being said, I have taken it for 1-2 mile treks in deep snow and found it only marginally harder to pull on it's own versus on the smitty so long as the snow is at least semi packed. I only find it really hard in large depths of light snow, or in really wet/clingy snow, but for those times the skis would be a god send.

The one thing I want to look into doing is devise a way to attach an auger holder of some sort onto the outside of the tub so I have it for easy access when hole hopping and so that it doesn't take up space in the tub when I am fishing. With the hand auger it's ok, but when I need the 8" holes or the ice is deep enough that I want to use the ion it eats up a lot of the middle tub space and is awkward to get in and out when I am changing spots.
Title: Re: Some Bayrunner Mods
Post by: 800stealth on Oct 16, 2015, 03:28 PM
Thanks for chiming in on how yours did on a smitty, good info.
An auger mount is something I'd like to do also... I always get in and out of the runner using the right door so I was thinking of some sort of hanger for the left outside of the tub so the auger is parallel to the ground hanging just under the lip of the tub. I use a 6" with a drill so it doesn't take up very much space but it would still be nice to just tuck it up tight to the runner and bring my battery inside especially on the smaller ponds where I don't drill many holes. For me the other benefit of hanging it up tight to the tub is for my dog. She always comes with me but I don't let her roam around the ice, when she's not in the runner she's on a 50' leash tied to the runner so the less stuff on the ice around me the less stuff for her to get tangled up in... Some sort of bait bucket holder would be nice too, she has sent my bait bucket flying across the ice a couple times with her leash... nothing like scrambling for your minnows as they freeze to the ice lol.

I REALLY like this shack and have been watching them since the first came out, I'm wanting to get one this season but I have a couple of questions I was hoping someone who has one could answer. The trap doors on the floor look kinda small, do you have to be precise on hole location and do the trap doors let snow in when traveling long distances? Also wondering if the tub fills up with the ice chips, slush and water from drilling a 8" hole? I'm wanting to pull it with my ATV so I'm wondering about Hyfax kit? Like I said I have been watching for a while and I'm ready to get one bought. FANTASTIC mods guys keep the pictures coming.

Bay Runner II not sure if a redesign or new model...I would think drill your holes then place your shelter

The trap doors are very well built and don't let anything in, the only exception I could imagine but haven't experienced would be if there was standing water over a couple inches while you towed with your wheeler, that might let small amounts of water in. You definitely don't want to drill your holes from inside, you'd fill the tub with water for sure but it only takes a couple tries to learn where to put your holes then push the runner over them, I usually drill two holes side by side then center on one and the other ends up mostly covered by the floor but still enough room to put a transducer in... Here's a pic with two six inch holes... If your towing behind a wheeler all the time I would think a hyfax set would be a good idea.

If you do 8" holes you can drill 3. In a row with an inch between. Two will be usable holes and the middle one will be exposed enough for your transducer wire. As stealth said, drill first than position. Would imagine it would be awkward trying to drill in the sled not even considering chips and water everywhere

My original plan was to steal one of the folding swivel seats from my Nitro and mount it to the bench but found it would be too high not only to fold up the tent but also too high to be comfortable... for me at least and I'm about 6'. So I thought about building a new seat frame that was lower to replace the bench but then you give up the storage height under the seat, that's when I decided to make the stock bench more comfortable and did the backrest. If you do go the folding seat route post it up so we can all see some more options for seating mods.

It does look pretty cool setup sideways like that, certainly more room for two. Though it does look like it could tip over if you sat with the bench all the way back. I'm really surprised we haven't seen the other manufacturers doing similar setups yet.

I think the top shelf is a 1"x8" and the bottom is a 1"x5" can't remember and it's still kinda tucked away in the den where I can't open it but I know the bottom is smaller to clear the slant of the tub. I'm guessing I used the existing holes, I know I used the biggest fender washers I could fit anywhere that something is bolted through the tub.

Has anyone tried taking the bench out and just bring a lawn chair with them? I pulled the bayrunner out of summer storage today and was playing around with the idea a bit . Obviously if i was bringing my son along i would put the bench back in, but i think a full scissor chair would be way more comfy than the bench even with the shelf backrest mod. I have a carpet laid in the bottom of mine, so the grooves in the tub don't seem to be much of an issue stability wise.  Other than that didn't really do much with her except check if she fits in my new vehicle (just, no more rooftop hauling for me!).

I never brought it out on the ice without the bench but I did try a camp chair in there while I had the bench out at home and what I found is it was a little low to be able to see out the windows well and it's tough to get the chair where you want it because of the hi and low spots in the tub... the legs always find the low spots, if the tub floor were smooth it would work much better. I did try this before I carpeted mine though... the carpet may help "smooth" out the floor enough.
Title: Re: Some Bayrunner Mods
Post by: Elrik on Nov 02, 2015, 08:06 AM
when I was testing I found that the carpet did work to smooth out the channels. Chair didn't slip into any specific spots. unfortunately the only way I could test was to put the chair in the front facing the bench seat as the chair couldn't go over the bench and still have it's legs touch. It looks like I should have ample room to setup as close/far from the holes as I like, but won't really know until the bench is fully removed.  I was testing with a lawn chair instead of a camp chair because I also find camp chairs too low and too awkward to get in and out of fast. the chair seat height is within an inch or two of the bench. I will give it a try on the ice this year and report back. Chair weighs less than the bench, the only negative I can think of is that it will take some rearranging of items in the sled to get it setup initially due to the cross braces between the leg pairs.
Title: Re: Some Bayrunner Mods

I guess the way a lawn chair is made without 4 legs but with just 2 half squares it would bridge the high/low spots too... Let us know how it works.

I had a flip shanty I just sold because I had my eye on a Bay Runner. I like to hole hop if the fish aren't biting and the flip was to much work to move round. Just the whole idea not packing everything up to move was the selling point for me. So I bought a Bay Runner at Fleet Farm for $275.00. No ice in Green Bay as of Dec. 20th so it gives me time to make some mods. I don't like fishing without a back rest so I plan on buying one of these stadium seats. 2 inch padded cushion, metal frame around the whole seat and back and 16 inches wide $25.00. Their are some good ideas on this site for the Bay Runner thanks for taking the time to post the mods.

Here are the mods I made to my Bay Runner. Rubber band around the reel holds the poles in place. The rack behind the seat really comes in handy and the entertainment center is a must. Everything is fasten down so, I only have to remove my lines and camera or transducer if I want to move to another fishing spot. No need to fold the shack down. Great hole hopper! I did put plastic runners on the bottom of the shack.

Cool!  I like!  Thanks for sharing.

What kind of flooring is in the bottom of your sled?

Ok guys and gals, I've received a ton of PMs saying a lot of people cant see the photobucket pics of my BayRunner build so I went through my old laptop and found some to upload... I know I've got a bunch more of the build but I need to find the folder or thumb drive they are on. As I find them I'll put them up, I'll try to remember to take some current ones on the ice but my runner hasn't changed much in the last couple years. If you have any questions just ask...

Finally got the Bayrunner out this year. No ice last year. I was able to open your modification pics last month. Just more of a pain.

Went back through the thread, and some of the pics don`t open, or lot`s of pop ups now. Only complaint with the Bayrunner is getting it back in the truck by myself. Got ram 2500 which is pretty tall.

I have a Ford Ranger and I use this ramp to unload my Bay Runner and then I use the winch to load it. I have a separate battery just for the winch and its has a wireless remote. When it's glare ice and you can't get good footing to push the shack up the ramp the winch is a back saver.

Yup, they can be tough to load. Looks like Beeler has it beat though... I have a lifted step side chevy and with the back bumper being a little over waist high I usually just stand the BR on its tail (it will balance there if not too windy) and back up to it, then lift and slide but I rarely use my truck ice fishing, I have a winter beater Rav4 that handles most fishing trips... I had to remove the back seats and modify (smash and break) some of the interior panels and remove the hinge limiter for the back door but I can manage to stuff the 44" wide BR though the 42" opening with enough twisting and swearing and it always dries nicely in the car with the heat cranked.
Its the price we pay for being able to sit in the bayrunner off the ice as opposed to a standard flp that loads and fits easier but your feet and some of your gear is on the ice...

Fantastic thread!  I am on the fence about getting a bay runner or an eskimo inferno one man.  Love not having to put everything away if I want to move and considering I will be pulling it with a wheeler, it would make things a whole lot easier!

Not pulling everything out of shanty to move is a big plus. I have my Bayrunner modified so that I don't have to remove anything if I have to move. I had 2 flip shanties and the Bayrunner is so user friendly once you make the mods. It's great for hole hopping! Also your feet are not on the ice and I have a rubber mat on the floor.

Really like the Bay runner.  Is it possible to fish two average sixe 200# guys?  I normally fish alone, but want the option from time to time.

I can't speak for the 200, but the original bayrunner was a tight squeeze for adult and small child, no way you would get two 200lb + guys in one.

I guess you could squeeze two guys in a runner to warm up in while waiting for flags but you'd be shoulder to shoulder and jigging would be really tough in my opinion...
