Title: 2018/2019 ice season recap
Post by: my-marty on Mar 30, 2019, 03:52 PM
Well my 1st full season of ice fishing in my entire life has come to a close. This was a season of learning and frustration for me but it ended on a high note. I spent most of December chasing perch with the wife and kids, man did we put a hurtin on them. Next came 3 trips to Sakakawea in January. This is a totally new reservoir to me. These first trips were butt kickers to say the least but I also learned a lot. Then came February which was the month of sickness for me and my family. So no fishing in February. March found found me breaking away from the crowds on Sakakawea and finally putting good walleyes topside. Limits became the norm as I started moving from structure to structure and always making sure I was away from everyone and being setup for the magical last hour of daylight. So here’s to a great first season on the ice. Tight lines everyone.

It's my 4th season of ice fishing, and I'm still learning. That's all part of it, is outsmarting the fish.

Its the painful moments when you realize that you are trying to outsmart a creature with an IQ of 3 and you are losing that are so humbling.

Marty, glad to see you enjoyed as wel as learned during your 1st year of ice fishing.  Ice fishing techniques change as the years go by so keep an open mind.  What we did back in the 50's and 60's  don't even come close anymore.  Large clumsy jigs like the wobble-write, 6 lb mono on bait casting reels and rods with perch eyes would always catch perch, but don't even think about using it today even on the same lakes we fished back then.  Even from the 70's to the 2000's the techniques have changed.  Today the fishing techniques have evolved to a finesse style of very light jigs, line and rods and reels.  So keep your mind open and change with the times to stay on the fish.

Season up by me in NE WI started with great ice and travel conditions. Mid season was a waste with horrible snow and slush, ended great with easy travel and good ice.
