LOTW Gear Setup
« on: Dec 17, 2019, 01:20 PM »
Headed to LOTW for a 4D/4N sleeper fishing trip with some buddies in January 2020. Wondering how to setup our gear for the fish there. I am just a lowly trout fisherman from Wyoming and don’t fish for walleye/sauger. Any basic advice is appreciated

I have never fished on those waters, but only hear from second hand.  It's a day bite.

I usually run 6# mono. Use red glow and green glow buckshot rattle spoons 1/8th oz. Also gold kastmaster same weight. For dead stick i use a thill slip bobber and red or green glow Bartness Industries Perch eye jig size #6. It is a day bite usually between 8-4. But we have caught plenty at night too.  We always do well. Been going up there well over a decade. Will be heading up there the 26th. Good luck and have fun.

You should be in for a good time we have a group that also goes up the 3rd week of Jan this will be our 4th year.
6lb mono is the standard on most of our lines some house if your are in sleepers have rattle reels built in so you can put something on there are night time if you want to.  It is usually a day bite but can catch the odd walleye or eelpout at night.  As for lures pink, red, and gold have been our best performers year after year.  Spoons and raps are often used also with some hammered gold seems to be the ticket it can change day to day also I hear some only use plain red hooks.
Also it is normally a pretty dirty/cloudy lake so cameras are of little use which is unfortunate but IMO you can leave the camera at home.
If your staying out on the ice pre made meals are a must also.  We normally bring along crock pot meals that can be put into a bag and thrown away after heating chili, tator tot hotdish, pulled pork.  A pizzazz is also a great item to have as you can basically bake with it while also doing pizza, chicken strips, brats/dogs, or toast for breakfast.

Up there I use 6lbs braid tied to a swivel then 6lbs of  Floro.   I have fished there quiet a bit and in a sleeper only once. The one thing I will say is bring your portable and auger if u are driving up. U can have some great luck in the shanty but when we were there we did not. I fished half a day in it with no luck so I went out searching. My buddy’s tought it out for a day and a half. With only 9 fish to show. I got lucky and caught well over my limit every day. Any questions feel free to pm me.  Def bring oil and a skillet. We cooked fish on the ice. That was prob the best part of the sleeper. Mark
