Dumb Tip Up idea?

I've got a couple of these spring loaded rod holders already.

  

The spring is really strong.  It seems like it would be pretty easy to rig it as a tip up using about any length of rod.  I'd need to bring a 1" drill bit with me to use on my ice drill to make a hole to set it in.
Should I give it a shot?
