Garmin Ultra 106sv for ice fishing
« on: Jan 29, 2021, 11:46 AM »
I have the Garmin Ultra in my trolling boat. I have mapped out 100s of hrs on lakes I also ice fish. Have any of you used The Ultra for ice fishing? I see Garmin sells a ice fishing kit that (may) fit this unit for $400. Having the structure all mapped out would be huge. I thought I could have the unit setting on the tank of my sled or in my side by side while looking at the bottom structure. Seems like this would be a great option. This is the kit I was considering. Not 100% sure if it would even fit my Untra

Besides an ice kit, if I had that head unit I'd definitely be getting the Panoptix LiveScope LVS12 Transducer. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/pn/010-02143-00#devices
Garmin EchoMAP Plus 95sv, Garmin EchoMAP CHIRP 53dv, Garmin GT8HW-IF, Garmin GT10HN-IF, DeWalt DCD999B, K-Drill 7.5"

Yes that is the plan but I am not sure which kit the head fits. Its a EhcoMap Ultra 106sv but will any of the kits that say EchoMap fit? or med, large?
I fish alot of deep water 50-100' for lakers. Will the LiveScope work well at depth? I have watched some Youtube on them but they are all in shallow water.

The LVS32 is the best Livescope transducer, the LVS12 is the cheaper version, would not recommend.

I don't have and have never used any Panoptix equipment ... just relying on the info provided on the Garmin site.

According to Garmin the LVS32 "requires the GLS 10 sonar black box to function."
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/622112/pn/010-12784-03

The LVS12 "Does not require a black box" and 'COMPATIBLE DEVICES' includes the Ultra 106sv.

"ECHOMAP Ultra 106sv supports a variety of Garmin transducers, including Panoptix™ all-seeing sonar transducers and the Panoptix LiveScope™ LVS12 scanning sonar system (sold separately)."

Check out the Ice Fishing Kit 'COMPATIBLE DEVICES' ... no Ultra models there. Also, beside being slightly wider and taller, the Ultra 106sv is almost double the depth (3.9") of the Echomap Plus 93sv (2").

It is very confusing, Garmin markets straight Panoptics, then sub-categories of Livescope (the LVS12 and the LVS32), they are both called Livescope, but the functional difference between the two is huge.  It is kind of like comparing a Chevrolet Spark and a Cadilac, GM makes both, each will get you down the road, but their capabilities are quite different, thus the price difference, the LVS 12 US list price is $499.99 and the LVS 32 is $1499.99.  This is a case of you get what you pay for.

You bring up another question I have. It looks like I can buy a Panoptics transducer and would not need the black box. So what transducer would that be? I am not ready to dump another grand into this unit.

I did get a email responce from Garmin today. None of the kits are large enough for the Ultra 106sv

You might look at some of the setups for larger Garmin units that Summit has.

The Panoptix package that included the carrying case in your original post was using the straight Panoptix, it does not use a black box, that transducer lists for $1000, the Livescope LV12 does not use a black box and lists for $500, the Livescope LV32 uses/includes the black box and lists for $1500.

In my mind you have three choices, nobody buys the Livescope LV12, so discard that option, which leaves you with a regular transducer similar to what you are using in open water now for less than $200, or go with the straight Panoptix for $1000 that can look forward up to 200 feet in any direction to identify where fish are (they call it the game changer, which it is) or go with the Livescope LV32 that does the same thing, only is so good you can actually see the form of the fish as they come near your bait.

If you are not able to spend $1000 to setup your unit to ice fish, then a regular transducer is your only option unless you can find a used straight Panoptix transducer, (they can sometimes be had for $500-$600 because people are upgrading to the Livescope LV32).  The Panoptix and the Livescope are not for everyone, they certainly up the cost of fishing, but once you have seen one in action it is evident they are in a class of their own, people using them do catch more fish. If you can't justify the cost of Panoptix, you will still enjoy your Garmin head unit for ice fishing.  Watch some utube videos and check out the Facebook Garmin ice fishing forum, or the FB Livescope forum, a world of information to be had on either of those two places.

Buy a summit fishing shuttle and bag. I would highly recommend buying into the full livescope system. You will probably be disappointed with the LVS12.

The ps22 can be a budget option, but you're going to want livescope.

So I called Hodges for a Ice Fishing transducer. They recommended the GT10. I have everything come this week that I needed. But the GT10 has a 8 pin plug and the Ultra 106sv needs a 12 pin. So another two weeks of ice fishing season gone while waiting on this BS. I called Garmin support on the 3ed and still no call back..... :%$#!:

I needed that to run the GT10 on my 73sv

Ducer has worked great for me.
