This one was about 2 inches long and came up out of water when I drilled a hole. Have seen them before but not in such numbers
-
Looks like a smelt
-
Where'd you catch it? looks like a smelt to me though. Slender body and the big eyes
-
silver side aka spering
also known as little son-of-a-b , bait stealers
I have used them as bait for smelt. filet them and cut into strips.
-
Smelt, get yourself a bucket full and have a feast.
-
definitely not a rainbow smelt. your's has a tiny mouth. a smelt does not have that solid silver stripe

Looks like it might be something a fish spit Up???
-
spearing, used them to catch snapper blue fish at the Jersey shore 65 years ago!Good bait.
-
thats a buck eye (emerald shiner )
-
that is an inland silverside closely related to the atlantic silverside, they stay very close to the waters surface, or ice in this case, notice the mouth is pointed up its because the feed on the surface.

Yes, officially named a "Brook Silverside". Common bait fish in upstate NY. Short lifespan and don't do well in captivity.
Need to use that ichthyology degree of mine every now and then.

ugh i meant brook silverside haha for some reason in my head i always mix the two up. Same here with the degree!
-
That’s spot on! Knew it was some sort of silverside I’m too used to the salty ones knew it looked a tad off but too close to a spearing to be anything else!!

Emeral Shinner
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerald_shiner
-
That's a salt water spearing !!!
-
the brook silverside has 2 dorsal fins this bait fish has one
https://nas.er.usgs.gov/queries/FactSheet.aspx?SpeciesID=318 (https://nas.er.usgs.gov/queries/FactSheet.aspx?SpeciesID=318)
you can clearly see this also the head is shaped different
but i am changeing my mind on it being a emerald shiner because that dorsal fin is back to far after careful examination and google 4 heinekens i have determined this is a emerald shiner brook silverside spearing hybrid ......... end of story

THANK YOU TRAPPER
-
your most welcome joe next week i'm starting a thread on how to tell the difference between a sabor tooth one eyed pickerel and the rare 17 striped hybrid tiger perch
-
You guys are something!! I've had a few but it still looks like bait to me!!
-
What is it ?
a minnow.
-
Looks like a smelt to me. We used to get buckets full out of Lake Erie when I was a kid.
-
Looks like a regular old emerald shiner.
-
Brook Silverside. I've caught perch on Little Sodus Bay that where so full of them that they puked them up. Was afraid the DEC might come along and ticket me for having bait with no receipt.
-
i think its a burbot
-
I'll go with Emerald Shiner, AKA, baitfish or minnow...!

The front fin is under developed in the Brook Silverside (observed in the photo you have)and laying down in the photos. heads look pretty similar to me. It is a Brook Silverside right down to the ground
-
Salmon....no brown trout.....no salmon ;D

Well after much deliberation and careful examination I would have to say this is a very distinct and close relative of the Niagara shiner making it a buckeye emerald shiner hybrid and most of all it is bait that will catch fish.

x2 - totally looks like a dead emerald. Seen enough of those coughed up from fish I caught. I also agree it looks like bait! Throw it on a hook and fish it!!!
-
Been seeing them in holes from Braddock's Bay all the way to Sodus.
