These Northerns were all caught in the same lake this ice season and they all are swimming today.... didn't weight or measure any of them just a quit picture and then the release... I was basically the guide on these trips... I'm in 2 of the photo's the one with the boy.....and that fish was his 1st northern ever....
I know some are not all that big but some of the smaller ones were the first pike though the ice for some of my friends...

No, they get pretty soft at that size.  Not only that, it's illegal to keep trophy pike in many jurisdictions and where it isn't illegal it is still a good idea to throw back the big girls as 3 or 4 small fish will taste better and you will be ensuring the health of the fishery by putting the large females who produce large quantities of good quality eggs back in the lake to spawn.

Here's what I've gotten so far this year.  Heading out to a jem of a lake in late March so hopefully there will be some more big snakes in my future!  I didn't get the tape or scale on her but guessing around the 12-13lb range.

Not the biggest, but the Best!  Took 2nd place (somebody edged me out by 1/2") for shortest fish in a local pike derby, worth $200.00 bucks! ;D  Got him with the spear in the darkhouse too.  Much skill  ::)  (LUCK :D) involved there!
