I have a Jiffy with a 3 HP Tecumseh engine. What/how to adjust the carb, as it is running a bit rich. I run Amsoil sabre at 50:1 in it, versus the recommended 24:1 with dino oil. Any and all help is appreciated !

ADJUSTING TECUMSEH 3 HP CARBURETOR
pop the red caps off.
Close both jets GENTLY
Open the Low speed 1/4 turn
Open High speed jet 1 1/4 turn
Start engine.
Adjust low speed until idling smoothly.
Open her up wide open.
Adjust High speed until engine transitions smoothly from idle to high speed without bogging.
Shut engine off. Let it cool.
Once engine is cold. Fire it up and let it idle for 30 secs. Open it up wide open again. Adjust if necassary.
The trick with the Jiffy's is to tune them during cold (ice fishing) weather.
Low speed screw, the one on the left.
High speed on the right.

Awesome ! Thanks so much...its a used auger I bought this summer, and I hope to keep it in good running order ;D
-
Let us know if ya get it running right.
-
it's tomorrow's " project" it runs ok now, just too much oil out the exhaust and wants to stall at idle..
-
I run Amsoil Saber at about 80:1 and I don't get any gunk out of the exhaust.
-
I know that the guy that I bought it from only ran about 1 gallon of the 24:1 through it, so I know that they say that there is a break in period, so eventually I will get up to the higher ratios...just don't want to kill it yet

Got this straight from Jiffy a couple of years ago:

Thanks Ice Dawg. I was glad to come across this thread after my old Jiffy didn't run at high speeds when I fired it up this year. I did exactly as you recommended and ta da, my old Jiffy is running nicely. Well, at least in the garage and driveway. Will try it on the ice tomorrow.

Glad it worked for you. ;D

topher7694,
send me a PM with a email address for you and I will send you a PDF copy of the Tecumseh Carb manual that I have.

My white lighning has preformed the same from brand new. Always took a while to warm up when cold and seemed under powered. I didn't think any different cause that's how it always was. After reading a few of these threads and making a few carb adjustments. WOW new machine.

So I just adjusted my old model 30 (the white and black model) the way listed on here and it made mine run crapty. So after tinkering with it for about an hour I figured out the the adjustment screws were opposite. (low speed on right, high speed on left) After changing this my auger came alive and was running better than ever before!
-
lol Glad ya got it working.

Before just turning any of the adjustment screws all the way in and ending up with a possible worse situation. Remember turning the idle screw in will lean and turning out will richen the mixture. The air mixture screw will do the opposite. Make adjustments in small increments and allow the motor to recover before any further adjustments. Its possible you may only need a small adjustment to fix the issue if this is actually the issue instead of starting over. Many times older needles are damaged when turning all the way in. It takes a delicate touch.
These adjustment screws don't really just turn on their own causing the mixture to be off, very rare. If you are seeing the need to adjust your carb it could the first sign there is an issue causing this. If fuel jets are being plugged it will be running lean. If the air jets are plugged it will run rich. If the float, float needle or any other passage is hanging or plugged it will cause the same.
Always ask why before making adjustments. I recently fixed a power head and all that was wrong is a kinked fuel supply line.

Does anyone have the document FISHFORPIKE attached below? the link does not seem to work now

No but I have this from when I bought my used Jiffy.
I think it is the same for 2hp, as I used these instructions for mine.
ADJUSTING TECUMSEH 3 HP CARBURETOR
pop the red caps off.
Close both jets GENTLY
Open the Low speed 1/4 turn (left)
Open High speed jet 1 1/4 turn (right)
Start engine.

These carbs are as simple as it gets... there is a miss understanding about the two screws... the one closest to the power head ( left hand screw) is the low speed/idle mixture screw... the other is the MAIN mixture screw.... both should be backed out 1 turn from lightly seated to start ( I find 1 1/8 - 1 1/4 to be better for initial cold start) start the engine and let it warm up... then adjust the MAIN ( right hand) mixture screw in ( towards lean) until it starts to sputter/misfire) from a lean out condition_ ( do this slowly allowing the engine to adjust to each new setting) when the engine begins to misfire back the screw back out ( keep track of revolutions) until the engine smooth's out and then once again begins to misfire from an overly rich condition... set adjustment in-between the 2 extremes... erring on the side of rich... repeat the exact same procedure for the low speed screw,... the main should always be adjusted first as this controls the volume of fuel available to the low speed circuit... do the adjustments slowly allowing the engine to adjust to each new setting...hurrying the process is the biggest mistake "back yard" mechanics make.... I've been working on 2 stroke small engines and outboards for 50 years...my specialty is fixing the ones every one else screws up.

thanks for the help all. I think I got it up and running. cleaned the diaphragm and adjusted the screws. seems to work best with the main screw 1.5 turns out and the idle screw 1 turn out. It does not idle well on its own but it will drill.
takin it out to NNY lakes tomorrow. Hope to gets some eyes or crappie.

Last I knew (most recently, last year) Chaumont Hardware still has rebuild kits for those carbs.

Good luck tomorrow - Let me know how Hyde is, please.
Fished Hyde for several hours today. Lots of small perch but nothing really worth trowing in the bucket. ice was fine at about 7" but the snow and slush was a bear. lots of slush and water on top the ice in spots. snow was about 4-6 inches. there were about two or 3 groups out there. not sure if they were catching.
looking for some walleye there on Hyde but no luck after two trips. Has anyone had luck at Hyde for anything other than dink perch?

Sounds like a bad spark plug if it’s a problem under load. That’s the first place to look.
