Regarding hole size
« on: Oct 17, 2018, 03:25 PM »
A new world record black crappie was just recognized 5 Lb. 7 oz. 19.25" length, with a 17.75" girth.
17.75" girth I would say you better have at least a 8" hole or that baby is not coming through.

Wow, what a giant crappie!    I wish there were pics of it.

If my math is correct:

Circumference of a 6" circle: 18.85"
Circumference of an 8" circle: 25.1"

Between holes freezing up a bit, and having enough wiggle room to get it in the hole, I agree with you.

Girth is the widest part of the fish in the middle of the fish. On a mainly flat fish it would be a little less than 1/2 the girth 17.75" divided by 2 = 8.875"

So you serious crappie fishers better get out your 10” augers!
Does Tennessee even get fishable ice?! lol

It's still easier to pull up a 16+" crappie through a 10" hole.

No but Wisconsin does, and the WI. state record is not that far off, 4 Lb. 8 oz. 19-3/4" length. Only misses the world record by 15 oz's.

This math only works if crappies are 2 dimensional. A fish that size is easily 2-3 inches thick (3rd dimension). A more accurate calculation would be

[(17.75") - (6.28")] ÷ 2 + (1" + 1") = ~7.74" "tall"
[(Girth) - (pi x 2" thickness)] ÷ 2 sides of fish + radius of back arch + radius of belly arch = approximate height from belly to back.

An 8" hole will fit a world record crappie.

Disclaimer: this calculation, while more accurate, is still imperfect due to variance in crappie thickness and shape of back and belly arcs not being perfect half circles.

Disclaimer #2: I'm not super fresh on my order of operation so my equation structure semantics may be slightly incorrect, the actual math is correct.

Edit #1: removed arc diameter from equation explanation.

Why is your arc diameter 0"?

Because I wrote it incorrectly, thanks for the proof read. That section needs to be omitted.

That is why I said it would be a little less than 8.87" I guess what I am saying is it might be pretty darn tough to get a fish that size through a 6" hole. Yes a 8" should do it.

Sure would be a nice problem to have. Size isn't everything. At least that's what I tell my wife.
