Title: *torn* what is the new item you have to have this year?
Post by: bjones1984 on Sep 06, 2015, 11:40 PM
I'm really torn between a few items I would like to have. Rods, jigs, and lures are a given for me. I'm talking large purchase items. I'm thinking about maybe investing in an aqua vu micro 5c plus with dvr, a new suit, maybe flasher, or just getting some hunting stuff instead lol. What would you guys do?  What would your major purchase be for the upcoming season?

I'd get a chart plotter/fish finder combo.  A nice portable unit I could use for ice fishing and the canoe would be great.

Maybe next year. ;)

no floating ice fishing suit? top of the list! striker hardwater. from a reformed artic armor user.

sounds like you don't have a sonar? if not, then second on the list. marcum lx-6

i have every thing (way too much stuff really) except for an under water camera, so thats all i might buy, but sounds like the water i fish and depth is not good enough for using a camera in. so i might (depends) buy a 3rd shanty or a 5th drill to try out (claims of a 1200 inch # drill just out). maybe an extra large sled to pull all the stuff i pull. i don't need any thing tho except for ice to use it all on. i can wait and have enough i can do mean while.

If I had to do it all over again with the knowledge I have obtained though the years.

Ice suits ...keeps you out longer hole hopping and warm in general

Flasher ...will get you on fish and keep you on fish ...gets you moving

Shelter....will keep you out on the most brutal of days when other won't go or stay for long .Size matters get a two man to haul all your gear ..leave a seat home when not needed.

Camera ...good scouting tool for type of fish ,types of structure and videoing your trips .

As long as your warm with the clothing you have ...and can be mobile ...put off the suit purchase til end of season sales .
The Flasher will be the biggest game changer of the bunch ...you wont regret it .Deals are out there through out the season...not so much of a deal at the end of the season and stock is usually depleted.
Shelter ...get a flip over ..for sure ..on calm days the sled is there to haul your gear ..and just a flip to get out of the wind during the worst of it.
The Camera should be the last of your purchases....can be more of toy at times then a tool Flasher first and camera second .

Do a search on the equipment you intend to purchase ...great info in them past threads .

YES Exactly Spot On.  Lastly you never said how you get on the ice and get around (transportation) Walking & Pulling sesrch for Smitty Sled and get that built for very low cost but high pay off!!!  If ATV or Snowmobile then do what I did... I added downhill skis from second hand store $10 directly to bottom of flip over to save the bottom so you can get many years of usage.  Bless

No, but never seen one either. The reopening holes is what got my attention. If you were thinking an Ion......go with a clam plate and the new Milwaukee brushless fuel drill with even more torque.

I wanted something lighter then my old trusty jiffy model 30 8in.......I am so blown away just how light and solid the clam plate is......can't understand why anyone would even look at an ice gator, ion, or strike master lithium.

My 8in nils head is the smoothest fastest cutting auger I've seen. The shaver and lazer cut great, and it is a nice short compact setup that can extent and give you length in seconds.

Yep thanks for the link. I read through most of that thread earlier and didn't find anything bad about the k-drill except for making sure you have the right drill.

I don't have anything powered right now, which is fine when the fish are biting and I'm still fishing in southern Iowa...lol. We go north a couple times during the winter and non powered augers are a workout! I was looking at the 8" k-drill without the clam plate or maybe the 6" and just overlap the hole.

i agree, 6" is plenty. i use a 4" too for upper portion of lower michigan when its 24 inches or more, scouting. we did have to make a figure 8 one time (over lap as you say) to get a 18.5" crappie out.
fresh blades on a lazer is fine for me and every one i fish with. i have a spare set i got on sale end of last season still in the box. stick with ridgid x4 (650"#) or gen5x (780"#) with 4ah batteries for a one time cost or milwaukee for their strongest fuel v2 (1200"#) with 5ah batteries if you don't mind a limited warranty/costs (5 year tool/3 year battery) more to operate long term.
one of my buddies use a 5" lazer and doesn't want any thing bigger. he uses ridgid drills too.

From experience, don't mess with a 6in. just get the 8in. It's the do everything size hole. I would buy big enough the first time so you don't have to upgrade  later. Also beware that the lazer auger catches bad when breaking threw the bottom of the ice. They are nice and fast but can whiplash your wrist bad on break through

I'm gonna try jigging up some pike this winter so I'm going for a full selection of the Northland Magnum Airplane jigs and a 10" chipper to make holes to put them through.   Will probably need some new Buckshots and Shiver Minnows too but other than that I'm pretty much set.

Marcum has a new wireless panner (not the one you use with WIFI) for underwater cameras.  It is like their old version but has a wireless remote.  That could be pretty handy.

If you have any lipless cranks for open water I would try jigging those for some winter pike. I tried it this past winter and drew the attention of plenty of pike. Since I was sight fishing for them they would come in so fast that it would scare me when they hit.

this year's big purchase is gonna be a 6-man hub shelter. my 3-man bit the dust last season, and i fish with large groups often enough to justify it. also hoping to do some overnight trips for catfish this year, and the 6-man will allow plenty of room for cooking and heating gear as well as a cot for when i just can't keep my eyes open anymore.

Bump.
Just wondering what new lures or other items would you all like to try this new ice fishing season? ???

For myself it's new lures, and there are a few I hope to find and try this season, lol. :woot:

1. Northland fishing tackle eye-ball spoon in the largest size. The sunrise color pike looking eye and walleye eye look interesting.
I think most fish species should go for them, yes, no, maybe so?

2. Pk lures rattling spoon. I have had luck on the other PK products so though this would be a good addition to try as well.

3. PK lures spin-a-jig. I made one myself out of a mack smile blade and had good luck on it this open water season.
It will be interesting to  see how the metal blade compares to my home made creation.

3. The Nils Master Jigger - 4. This 4" glide bait should be a real hit for pike, burbot and if they were really aggressive, walleye.
They are a bit pricey and around here only 1 tackle shop that I know of, carries them.

4. I hope to try a few of those vmc bladed hooks and see if they improve my pike and maybe, walleye rigs.
I will also make my own with a tiny colored Colorado blade and bit of fishing line to see which one works better.

5. I purchased Kamooki Smart fish and smart craw to try this season and see how it goes.

6. I purchased a bag of Berkley PowerBait Max Scent in the flatnose minnow.
If they work as good as they say, it might be a hit.

7. SteelShad. I have not really tried blade baits before, but this might be a good one to test.
Good range of sizes and colors.

8. Live Target Flutter Shad. Should be a good one to jig through the ice.

9. Live Target erratic shiner. Although this is more of a casting spoon it should also work through the ice.

10. Live Target slow roll shiner. This one is a swimbait, but should work when jigged on a jig head.
All the live target lures are very life like and this new injected core technology is interesting.

Have any of you tried any of these lures I mentioned.
If so how, did you like them? ???

WW

I’ve already committed to a 2-man flipover, my big clam hub is comfortable, but it’s just too bulky for solo or 2-person trips, especially if I want to stay mobile. We’ll see if there’s enough time in the season after that to save up for either a second flasher or a camera. I’m always taking newbies out, so having spare electronics for them to use makes the trip that much more enjoyable for both of us.

Ordered a flasher - Vexilar FLX 20.  I've ice fished off and on for 40 + years, never used electronics.  Ordered it yesterday - delivery notice for today, carry bag delivers Monday.

Ordered some stuff from Mudhole 2 weeks ago to build a rod - it's all here except the grip.  For some reason they waited a week to ship it and it's still a week out on delivery.

Ordered a couple reels from Amazon 2 weeks ago - they haven't shipped yet.

I've mostly fished trout over the years and would like to do more perch fishing - I need some jigs / lures for perch.

I've had good luck with them overall - this one is annoying though.  $12 grip is taking almost 2 weeks actual transit time on fed ex.  I guess free shipping comes with a cost!

Better yet a 10#. Something on my list.

Mudhole is terrible about shipping.  I'm not pleased with them.

2X on that.
I ordered 2 times and 2 weeks later I actually forgot what I ordered. Jahan's or the guys in Texas are near the same prices and much quicker.

I can simply the whole thread and give my two cents... in order of importance

- Safe Ice - 4 inches will do but the more is better
- Hungry Fish - big enough to bend a rod
- Auger - I run a Jiffy Propane
- Quality Rod/Real - if I had to pick one it’s my TUCR bullwhip with BB6061
- Flasher - running a marcum 5 but any will do (saving for a vex 28)
- Warm Boots
- Striker suit - my new purchase this year!
- Shanty - for me it’s a Frabill 100 - lightweight to stay on the move
- Buddy Heater
- Bigger Fish...

Everything else is luxury.

Wilcraft, I would love to purchase one. No more Sleds or fourwheelers plus all the storage you need. Sunny or snowy and who cares about thickness of the ice. Just fish.
