Cleaning Perch - Best Method?
« on: Dec 10, 2018, 10:09 PM »
(First post!)

So, I was looking for good, quick ways to clean perch, and came across this YouTube video on "How to Clean a Perch in 10 Seconds" from Costa on Lake Simco, Canada.  I've tried the method a few times and it works pretty well.  As with everything, practice is key.  Here's the vid:

So, does anyone have a better way, or is this the bomb?

I’ve seen that same video and done the few times I’ve kept perch, as I usually release everything. Once cooked the meat comes right off the bones anyway.

Welcome to the shanty Tanglemeister, I have seen this video but have not tried this method yet. I dont mind my electric knife when fileting them up. You may want to put your location in your profile so we know where your from to help when talking to you about specific areas. I'm assuming your in Utah

I saw this a while back and tried it. It's crazy easy and clean. Seamonkey is right about the bones peeling out once cooked or you can take 'em out when you've got the skin n guts handled. Either way it's very efficient.

Both the grand-dads and my old man liked skin on so that meant scaling (at least for the kind of panfish we caught). Messy, messy, messy... and pan dressed so head, dorsal and pectoral fins off, skin on and tail on fried in lard in cast iron. Got so I loved the crunchy tails  ;) Still like those deep fried chicken wing tips and shrimp heads. Mmmm!

Average size out of Cascade Lake, ID.   ;D  No; REALLY!  I got 5.5 pounds of fillets (no skin or bones) off 25 perch on a trip up there 2 years ago.

I also noticed that all the fish she was filleting were scaled.  Must of been by the gal to her right.  I may have to give that method of removing the fillets a try next time I get a mess of perch.  But I won't scale them first, I'll just remove the skin like I normally do.  I've tried the first method shown above  and found that the bones can still be a problem when eating, so i like to fillet, skin, and remove the rib cage.  But what that last video showed is interesting and may be my new favorite way to do it if successful for me.

I know, Cascade is crazy but not a day trip for me  ::)

For the most part, perch that size don't exist in this part of the country. We did find some 12"ers last year @ LBDN but as far as WI goes, that would be the exception to the rule. I also noticed they were scaled too. Probably tumbled with the woman to the right rinsing and double checking. See how beat up a couple of the heads were?
