Flasher Battery is dead!
« on: Dec 16, 2021, 07:54 PM »
So it is this time of year when we find out our 2 to 4 year old flasher battery won't take a charge any more. I have found a replacement that doesn't break the bank.

Before you buy another SLA maybe shop around for a deal one of the Lithium jobs.  So much lighter and longer lasting between charges.  I believe they last for many more charging cycles too.

I'll second this. So much lighter and have run mine on 2 consecutive days, all day, with plenty of juice left. Game changer for sure.

Just picked one of these up from Marine General in Minnesota. Price was comparable and shipping was prompt.

I just purchased a Dakota Lithium battery. 12 v 10 amp. $ 99.00 for the batterey & $ 29.00 dollars for the charger. You must use there charger to get the full charge . If you use a regular charger you will damage the battery. The really nice thing about the battery it comes with a 11 Year warrenty !  Also i weight my Hummingbird ice 45 with the old battery & when i put the Dakota Lithium Battery in it is 4 lbs lighter. Cant wait to try it out when we get ice. I bought it thru Reeds ! I know when i bought it it was 10% off with the code Ice.

Being that today is New Years Day, mark your new 2022 calendar on April 1, July 1, October 1 and December 1 as "CHARGE BATTERIES" days. Charging all of your SLA batteries on a schedule like this will make them last for MANY years, maybe even a decade or more. Charge them after every use as well. I'm on my second SLA battery in my Vexilar FL18 deep water model that I bought in January 2004! The factory battery lasted until 2017. Letting those batteries sit dead will kill them every time.

What Whiteymalone said,  I've never had one last less than 8-10 years.  Maintenance is the answer.  Your dollars if you want to throw them away.

Ive had a few sla crap out, only because i neglected them. The ones that were on my flashers, those i always top off throughout the off season and they lasted 5-6 years without issues. Ive converted them all to lithium now

What others have said...charge periodically during the off season. It's in the owners manual. Might wanna give it a read.

go with lithium if you can budget it in. I swapped all mine over a few years ago and its been great.

I run a 40V 5ah battery for my finder using choke to bring my output to 12v. The battery lasts me about 2 full day trips.

My old SLA from vex which was over 11yrs old still worked fine, the negative terminal snapped off so I couldn't use anymore.

Just bought a 100ah Class 31 lithium for something else, that is unbelievably light for the amount of power.
